Linda, Thank you so much for bringing this to the attention of the list. One of the most touching pieces of paper I have collected in years of genealogy research is an account of a relative's participation in the Civil War which he wrote from my understanding for a Maryland supplemental pension. When I read "we took Pickett's Charge" (as his unit was right at the High Water Mark) and in another battle "we fired (light artillery) for thirty straight hours and I have not heard normally since", I felt like William Broderick was speaking right from the battle field. What a disgrace that NARA would just about seal these types of records to most people who can't go to DC to make their own copies by charging $125 instead of the already too high $37, from people who honor their ancestors by trying to learn about them! I hope everyone calls their Senators and Representatives. For a small portion of the amount government wastes, I think NARA could put all the civil war records online. Google is digitizing millions of books from university libraries - awesome to search under google more. The CIA has an online Freedom of Information website with declassified documents so they don't have to answer individual freedom of information requests. Don't think NARA couldn't find and train an army of excellent volunteers to scan documents to the web instead of the archaic idea of charging $125 for 30 or 40 copies? Thanks again, Art Grady --- soulmate <soulmate@adelphia.net> wrote: > >From information I received from other county lists > the NARA is going to raise the rates for a copy of > full pension files from $37.00 to a whopping > $125.00.
