What used to be called the "County Home" was a Hospital, Poor House and Infirmary. People who were homeless or infirm, the elderly and the very young, rich, poor, white and 'colored' were taken care of there. Some stayed only a short time, perhaps until they found work or 'got better.' Some stayed until they died, whether it was from illness or old age. Many were alone in the world and had no-one to care for them. Women gave birth there. We were lucky to find our County Home records in the basement of the courthouse. (Mahoning Co., Ohio.) Has anyone checked the courthouse in Cumberland? Jocelyn in Ohio
