    3. Phyllis, It was of interest to me to read "George's Creek Coal and Iron Company" because I have recently found a court paper naming George's Creek Coal and Iron Company vs. Philip H. Paugh and John Friend (my g, g, grandfather). For the George's Creek Coal and Iron Company I only see the names of "Walsh" Mch. (Merchant?) Hugh O'Neill; Petition - Act. "A" in regard to the Coal and Iron Company. The print is very faded and deciphering this 1853 document is difficult at best. Pat Thompson -----Original Message----- From: mdallega-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdallega-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of PRosley@aol.com Chere, Here is a quote from a book written by Betty VanNewkirk titled "Windows to the Past" She was writing about the Welshmen, but I would think they probably recruited other nationalities also. " The mining companies actively recruited men in the Welsh mining region, in some cases paying the travel expenses of entire families to bring them to Maryland. The ship Tiberias, for instance, was chartered by the George's Creek Coal and Iron Company in 1838 to bring 300 miners and their families (and one lady!) from New Port, Wales, to Baltimore and then to Allegany County.
