This is the fourth year I have organized and hosted our Hamilton Reunion. I include in the flyer a request for a $5.00 per adult registration fee. Then at the reunion I go over the expenses and let them know I have to pass the hat - Since we are so new at this and we have only had a max. of about 30 attend, we have not been able to build a fund. So far, the cousins do not want to try an auction of any sort. I always supply everything, and request that everyone bring a covered dish to share. I have hosted many other smaller family reunions, to try and get a regular one going. And I supply everything at my home, and some have helped by bringing covered dishes. However, at another reunion for my husbands family, they have been going for over 25 years. Those that host it (they "elect" (?) new officers every year) and this family group insists on a white elephant auction every year and also a chinese auction. This is to make money to cover expenses. However, the business meeting had voted NOT to do this many years ago, but the group running it insists on doing it. But if expenses were cut down they would not "have" to do an auction. The result of this is that many have stopped attending the reunion and income for registration ($5.00) is way down - I know in 2002 we had around 150; 2006 was less than 75. I agree there should be officers, but also think the rules should be re-checked. If you don't live in the county where the reunion is always held, you cannot be an officer. (truthfully, if you are not a member of THIS family group, you are not "asked" to be an officer. Another story -lol The one constant tho is: great times are had by all and the reunion is greatly appreciated. We are planning our 4th Hamilton reunion in Lonaconing this summer on Dan's Mt. and will also take the family to Oak Hill Cem. to visit our ancestors. Looking forward to it.
