    2. Alan I appreciate very much your postings. Can you tell us - What were the dates that the original northern boundary of Maryland, at the 40 degree mark, was in play? Were Maryland counties organized in this area? What were they? What became of them? Some of this same area was claimed by both PA and VA, and both had "official" county organizations collecting dual taxes from the citizens c 1769-1784...     3. I can only tell you is that Virginia did indeed claim a large portion of the state of Pennsylvania that extended from the Ohio River to the eastern end of what is Somerset County, PA. Maryland wasn't involved with this. I don't recall when Frederick County, MD was formed nor do I recall what county it came from, but it covered all of the western part of Maryland. In 1776 Washington County was formed from Frederick County and it included all of western Maryalnd. In 1792 Allegany County was formed and it included both Allegany and what is now Garrett County, which was formed in 1872.
