No formal or legal birth and death records were kept in maryland until the year 1895 or later era. Some early marriages are recorded at the courthouse in Allegany Co. Other statistical records can be found scanning microfilmed newpapers or check out our Allegany Co rootsweb website @ http://rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mdallegh/ Especially check out Charles Oftens excerpts from the Cumberland Times on this site. John, I am trying to find the parents of Jonathan Scott Hamilton born in either 1831 or 32 in Cumberland, MD. Word of mouth says that his father was Jonathan Scott Hamilton Sr, a wealthy plantation owner. There are no records in Australia that mention anything about his origins in the USA apart from the year and place of birth. It becomes a bit confusing as when his last two children were born (when he was in his 60s) he used the name Jonathan Boyer Hamilton. He also gave both of those children the middle name Soister. We have confirmed niether of these names come from his wife's side. May I suggest it's easier to find death or burial records than birth records for those early days. Donna Hogle, San Diego
