Hello list, Are there any photography buffs out there that might have any information about the years of business of Towles Studios? They had an office in both Cumberland on Center St. and I'm guessing Broadway, in Frostburg the address is to hard to read on the bottom of a photo I have. Also does anyone know up to what age little boys wore dresses? I know they wore gown like dresses but has anyone seen a family photo with a little boy in a more "dressed-up" style dress and do you know the date please? Thank you Carol
Hi Carol - I have a photo of my uncle who was born in 1910 wearing a dress. Very cute two piece! He looks about 4 or 5 years old which means the photo was taken in 1914 or 1915. Photo was taken in Michigan. My grandfather was born in Midland MD. in l870. Carol, In the Bell Publishing Co. Cumberland City Directory of 1895-1896, there is a Towle's Art Studio, listed under Photographers, located at 65 1/2 N. Centre Street in Cumberland. Also, in the Polk Cumberland City Directory of 1899, there is a Towles Co listed under Photographers at 115 Baltimore Street. Can't help on the dresses. Carol, I have a picture of my father wearing what I'd call a dress. My aunt, his sister, says they called them "Russian suits". He was about 3 or 4 years old in the picture, which would have been taken about 1916. It's a cute picture, but I don't know why they dressed little boys that way. Carol, I have a photo of a little boy pictured with his twin sister. They were born 1900 and he is wearing a dressy dress, and looks to be about 3 or 4 years old. Ruth
