They usually cash the check pretty quickly - and then it takes 4-6 weeks. I had hem cash the check once and had to reimburse me because my great grandfather had actually died in West Virginia. His family had recorded the death certificate in Maryland but they could not send me a copy. On a similar note - if there are relatives I can not find in the Maryland Vital records but I have their date of death is there a way to send just that information to get a copy of the death certificate or does it have to be on their list?
I wrote to the address on the Maryland Archives website with the data I had on 2 relatives who were not on the on line index. I could only give a timeline for their deaths. I also sent a check with the hope that they would find these ancestors. About 6 weeks later (may have been longer) I got the death certificates for both. Have no idea why they were not on the index. I think I saw once that it cost about 10 to 25 dollars to research the death certificate if you don't have the info. They used to have an email address where you could ask those questions. But some time ago I sent and email and it was returned. The address no longer was there.
