Many months ago we had a discussion about what a coaster was. I had posted an article for about 1907 or so about Alex Allerdice injured badly after he was hit by a coaster. I think we kind of all agreed that a coaster was a sled or sleigh time vehicle. Well, I just found an article from 1952 that mentions that Gladys Morris was the only girl entry in the coaster event, at Lonaconing, scheduled to get under way on Douglas Ave. She was going to drive the car with her brother Keith. SOOOO..... I am thinking a coaster was most likely like todays Soap Box Derbies. I imagined that Alex was hurt badly by a sled - but now to think it was a derbie coaster, hmmm he most likely was hurt. I just thought I would pass this bit of info just in case someone else was still pondering it. haha yeh right. Ruth
Ruth, I had a cousin who was killed while coasting. She was really sled riding in Mt. Savage, went down a hill and hit a telephone pole. She had only been married a few mounths. She was only 20.
