Hello, I am hoping someone on this list can answer a few questions regarding a land deed in Maryland. I have a document where Josiah Lee is purchasing 365 acres for 2530 pounds from the state of Maryland. It says this is land confiscated from the Nottingham company, the date is 1781. There is also the word "contra" at the top of the page. Can someone tell me what Contra is? Would this be a large land purchase being 365 acres and 2530 pounds for a man in his 30s? We are trying to determine if this is Josiah Lee Sr. or Jr., I feel this would be a lot of money and land for a younger man. What was the Nottingham Company? I'd appreciate some thoughts from people familiar with this area. Thank you very much. Stephanie Miller, Oregon "Happiness is not a station you arrive at, but a manner of traveling"
Contra is the same as assigned. Like when you are transferring a deed.
Dear Stephanie Where I lived in Baltimore there was a Nottingham Co there . but This was a gravel and Sand Co. They had a Gravel Pit in Carney Md. in the mid 1960 then Campbell and son bought them up.
