A Google search for Nottingham Company brought up History of MD, by Scharf. This book in online and searchable. I found Nottingham Company in the 1780 time frame and also a Nottingham Iron Works. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephanie" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2009 11:53 AM Subject: [MDALLEGA] Land Deed Questions Hello, I am hoping someone on this list can answer a few questions regarding a land deed in Maryland. I have a document where Josiah Lee is purchasing 365 acres for 2530 pounds from the state of Maryland. It says this is land confiscated from the Nottingham company, the date is 1781. There is also the word "contra" at the top of the page. Can someone tell me what Contra is? Would this be a large land purchase being 365 acres and 2530 pounds for a man in his 30s? We are trying to determine if this is Josiah Lee Sr. or Jr., I feel this would be a lot of money and land for a younger man. What was the Nottingham Company? I'd appreciate some thoughts from people familiar with this area. Thank you very much. Stephanie Miller, Oregon
