I think we need to remember that all too often our computers get infected with viruses. Some of those viruses will send spam email to everyone in our address book WITHOUT our knowledge. It's annoying, yes, but not their doing. A friendly note to the sender advising them that a strange email came from their address would alert them to the virus and they can take steps to remove the virus.
