Judy: All list admin's have an email via Rootsweb: XXX-admin@rootsweb.com. XXX=name of list so for this list it's: MDALLEGA-admin@rootsweb.com This isn't a site - it's a list and you have to contact someone at RW and the Help Desk is hard to find (used ot be easy but hard to find now). Anyway here's the url: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/form1.html You'd want to click on 'contact us' and a form comes up to fill in. Is Harriet Moore Allegany Gen Society? It's housed in MDGenWeb but has no connection to this list. Becci: I'm very sorry to hear of the death of your daughter, way, way too young. Someone hijacked your email addy and used it to post a spam message to this list. This happens all the time and there probably isn't anything much you can do to prevent it. It is probably a good idea to scan your computer for a virus, although email hijacking can happen without a virus. I have heard but do not know for certain that changing your password can prevent the hijackers from getting back into it. Don't think this is necessariy true but you can try it. When an email is hijacked it sends out email/spam that appears to come from your email and goes to addresse that are in your email address book - that means that if someone writes to you directly and this happens again, they are going to personally get the spam emails. So most folks aren't going to write you. Also, I don't think many people knew that you were a legitimate listmember. Dear Becci, I was sad when I read about the death of your daughter. It is such a tragedy and you have my deepest condolences.
I think we need to remember that all too often our computers get infected with viruses. Some of those viruses will send spam email to everyone in our address book WITHOUT our knowledge. It's annoying, yes, but not their doing. A friendly note to the sender advising them that a strange email came from their address would alert them to the virus and they can take steps to remove the virus. Even with an anti-virus program, some viruses do slip through, and we are totally unaware of its presence. Genie Editor by Default OurBrickWalls.com
Kathi, Thank you for this help. I mailed mine to Harriett Moore because I couldn't forward it to anybody. Who is the list administrator's email and phone? Where is the help desk for this particular site. Think of RW as an email clearinghouse. We send our messages to them, they in turn send them out to everyone subscribed to the list. Although it may look to you that you are being emailed by JoeBlow@unknownisp.com you are being emailed by Rootsweb. So blocking another listmember won't stop you getting email when they post a message to the list, since it isn't "them" who is sending the email to you, they are only sending to Rootsweb who in turn basically forwards it to you. Some ISP's, especially AOL, will bounce your email if you are blocking another member. You'll have no idea you aren't getting mail until the bounces reach the number specified by the admin (3 or 4) and then you'll be automatically removed from the list. And on an active list this can happen really fast. Rootsweb recommends (1) delete and forget, never click on any suspicious link (my anti-virus program immediately recognized that link as potentially harmful and told me so), (2) tell the list admin there's an issue but don't forward the original email back to the list (3) complain to the Help Desk. Spam and other garbage is part of email internet life - you don't see what RW does catch and block, it's amazing how much garbage gets sent to lists that fortunately never makes it past the spam blockers. List, I don't know what is going on here, but I haven't been active on this list for a long time due to the illness & death of my 23 yr. old Daughter. And I wouldn't DARE put spam out on the list. I have been on here for years. Then I get a message from one of the other members on here saying he knows "how I am" & I don't even know him. Whats up with that? Why didn't someone just let me know?????
Marge, Can you please tell me where you found the reference to Israel Friend. I am presently working on a book that covers Israel's line and I have not seen anything written about him in Rappahannock or Opessa Town (Old Town). If you are using Outlook Express you can go the MESSAGE tab on the tool bar and scroll down to BLOCK Sender and this will remove the email and also block future emails from this email address. I presume the same action can be used if you are using Microsoft Outlook. Dick Crow "The Ole Crow" Retired and enjoying it! "Fair Winds and Following Seas."
What has happened is someone has hacked into Opessa Town's email and is sending spam to everyone in their address book. Do not click on the link - it is most likely malicious or inappropriate content. Delete it.

It's up to Rootsweb to replace a list admin, not to the listmembers. As long as a list admin responds to RW's and has a valid email address they are not likely to replace anyone. These spam emails are a reoccurring and very commonplace issue--we talk about it all the time on the listowners list. Rootsweb will block spam or an email that is not subscribed to a list but this time someone who's email is probably legitimately subscribed to this list is basically highjacked and sends out spam emails to every email listed in their address book. The person who's email that came from probably had no idea this was happening. About the only thing an admin can do is to put an email addy on moderate and check their postings when they come through to make sure it's not spam. Best thing for listmembers to do is delete and not respond - definitely do not repost the original email back to the list again. I'm sure Carol is reading the messages. Kathi Jones-Hudson MD Tombstone Transcription Project Manager http://www.usgwtombstones.org/maryland/maryland.html
well, maybe the person sending the message was just trying to be helpful and pass on a link to data (?) and maybe it was not spam -HOWEVER when we do that, we should AT LEAST tell others on the list what it is - way too much garbage going around and you were brave to click on the link. haha Tx, Ruth
I didn't click the link. I took the email addy and went to google. There it took me to several sites about Opessa Town. I wouldn't click a link with all the virus and worst around today you can't trust them. I think the person used a name that people would recognize and they could "catch" them. But you are correct if a person wants to give us information they would tell us about the site and then give us the address of the site not their email address.
Last I remember, Carol Askey (last name might be wrong) was the list manager, but I haven't seen her on here for a *LONG* time. Not sure how you go about getting a new list manager if the old one drops out of sight, dies, etc..... Send an email to the address and see who answers.
I went on line and researched Opessa Town and it has articles about the first white settlers to the Virginia Rappanannock etc area. The first white man was not accounted for in Opessa Town , I think they call it Old town now, was named Israel Friend. It was interesting. I am sure the name in the email was not connected to that but it did give me a little research I would not have know.
MDALLEGA-admin@rootsweb.com This is the only link I can find to reach the list administrator.
I am wary of those type of email and automatically delete them with out doing anything. I would just do the same.
do we have a list mgr. to take care of opessatown@yahoo.com ??
