The August September issue of the Allegany Magazine has an article I wrote about finding my Irish cousins. If anyone would like to read it, I can scan it and e mail it to you. It is a great magazine and, if you want to subscribe, go to www.alleganymagazine.com<http://www.alleganymagazine.com>. As some of you may know, my Irish cousins came to Allegany county in June. I have been trying, since then, to write the "rest of the story" but for the life of me, I cannot find the words to describe this magnificent event!
bio for James Erskine Moffatt (son of John and Letitia (Strong) Moffatt. ; 1869 married May J. Jameson. http://www.archive.org/stream/menormarkinmary00bogggoog#page/n266/mode/1up
Pat, I found a publication regarding the genealogy of the Moffat family, published in April 1907. Title was: Moffatana Bulletin by George West Moffatt page 25 states the following: "Cumberland, Md. -- Rev. James Erskine Moffatt, D. D., celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of his pastorate on Feb. 9, 1908. During this time the church has prospered in every way, and is now one of the most substantial in the Presbytery of Baltimore. Dr. Moffatt was born in Bloomington, Ind., graduated from Monmouth College in 1866, and McCormick Seminary in 1869; was licensed by Monmouth Presbytery in May 1868; and ordained by Springfield Presbytery in june, 1869; was Pastor at Decatur, Ill., 1869-1873, and at the First Church of Ottawa, Ill., 1873-77, coming to Cumberland early in 1878.--Herald & Presbyter. (This is a County Antrim, Ireland-South Carolina Line)." Ruth
Pat, there was also a president of Washington & Jefferson College (Washington Co.,PA), whose name was Rev. Dr. Moffatt. (don't know the years) also by googling, located reference to the Rev. Dr. Moffatt of Cumberland conducting funeral services. Ruth
May 1915 obit for Miss Estella Redmond Macbeth states the following: The funeral is at the Presbyterian church with interment at the church cemetery with Rev Dr. Moffatt. hope this helps.
Can someone give me an idea where this gentleman may have been a minister. Just found a 1909 wedding announcement for my grandparents. Mrs. Bertha V Robison of Patterson Creek, daughter of Mr and Mrs J Kaylor of this place and Mr. Solomon M Robison, foreman at Patterson Creek were united in marriage Wednesday morning at the home of Rev. Dr. Moffatt. Would like to locate a marriage record or ledger of some sort. Thanks. Pat
My g-g-grandfather moved his Valentine family from Cumberland to Turtle Creek in the 1900's. I'm not sure why they moved because the family had always been farmers according to the census. Ironically he and his wife are buried in Rosehill Cemetery in Cumberland. Someone in the family returned them to Cumberland when they passed away. ----- Original Message ----- From: "ekrichardson1" <ekrichardson1@bellsouth.net> To: <MDALLEGA@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, October 15, 2010 5:40 AM Subject: Re: [MDALLEGA] Allegany move to PA My husband's entire Richardson family moved from Frostburg to Turtle Creek in the 1910's. Thanks Dick, Got them both, no problem. Now I guess the only way to see the title transfers is to trace the title at the court house. Thanks much for your help. No Ruth, This is how it was written when I found it. But I have never seen Abe as Abbe so there could be a typo in either name. Crawfis, Crawfus, Crawfice, etc. That is why it is so good to see the original records vs. transcriptions. Human errors and typo's everywhere. But they are better than nothing. I dug deeper and did find the death in 1909 of David Crawfus, son of Samuel. It listed one surviving brother and 2 sisters in "town". Ruth
Where would I go to get information on Military Lots I believe was awarded to Garret Snedeger. This information was obtained from the Allegany County Deed Book 1795 -1806 recorded in a library book at SLC. I wonder if these are the correct lot numbers or if the lot numbers were consecutive. I know nothing about military lots or how they were assigned. If someone can tell me where to verify this information and how I can trace the deed transfers for this property I would appreciate it. Thanks. Pat

The following Leasure obituary appeared in todays issue of the Herald-Mail (Hagerstown, MD) newspaper. Since he was born in Cumberland, I am passing this on because there may be a connection for a Leasure researcher. [1]Bernard DeSeal Leasure APRIL 24, 1921-OCT. 10, 2010 ST. JAMES - Bernard DeSeal Leasure, of St. James, Md., went to be with the Lord on Oct. 10, 2010, after a long and exemplary life. He was born in Cumberland, Md., on April 24, 1921, to Virginia Whorton Leasure and Harry Leasure. He graduated from Morgantown High School in 1940. He then fought in the Army during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theater, from 1942 to 1945. He served as a combat engineer in the 209th Battalion of the prestigious Merrill's Marauders in Myitkyina, Burma, assisting in the building of the Ledo Road, a strategic supply route for the Western Allies. In this capacity, his unit was often called upon to defend their position in order to continue the project, and he survived a protracted firefight in a foxhole, utilizing keen shooting and characteristic patience. His battalion was the most decorated in Myitkyina, a place that saw significant action. After the war ended, he met his wife, M. June Summerfield Leasure, of Cumberland, while working at the Celanese Corp. He also became a devout Christian. He graduated from Bob Jones University and from Western Carolina Teachers College. He taught high school English in various schools in Washington County. While teaching, he also established a driving school, Leasure's Driving School, to provide instruction for students outside the school system. He was concerned with special populations, such as recent widows who needed to learn how to drive, and was sensitive to the cultural mores of the Mennonite community. He was a church planter, deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was a member of Evangel Baptist Church in Hagerstown. He loved adventure and travel, so after retirement and raising his family, he and his wife traveled to all 50 states. Bernard is survived by his wife of 63 years, June Leasure, and four children: Yvonne, Mark and Beth, in the Tri-State area; and Jon, in Idaho. He is also survived by six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was most beloved for his faithfulness, fight and teaching gifts. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown MD 21740. The Rev. Ron Faith will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery. Reception will follow at Evangel Baptist Church. Graveside military honors will be conducted by Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and Marine Corps League of Hagerstown. Online condolences are accepted at [2]www.minnichfh.com.
