Priscilla, could you please send me a copy. I really appreciate all you are doing. Jo lennyjo@atlanticbb.net
to research all 170 men listed. I would assume there were many more than just these listed on this date, in other newspaper editions, etc. I could help in transcribing these 170 names, but it wouldn't seem to be a complete list to me, and I wonder if there would already be another source out there with a list. I wish we knew where these 16 districts placed on a map. It would help to locate where these men lived within Allegany Co. Heh gals, The first place to start looking would be a possible history of the county that includes a roster of all regiments and names. (Lake/Geauga counties in Ohio had an 1878 history of the counties produced by the Williams Bros. - I do not know if they only did Ohio, or other states.) Pennsylvania regimental history was done by Bates.) GOOGLE and try searching for Maryland regimental rosters and see what can be found. ALSO - ancestry.com has the CW databases - some of them you can search by county - don't key in any names, just search for Allegany county Maryland - see what you get. Or if you can search by town, do that , town by town - Another place is the 1890 Pensions List - that can be searched by county, and will give you all living in Allegany Co. MD that is receiving a pension. REMBEMER tho, that this is any pensioner living in the county - so he could have moved from another county or state. All this has to be proved. Their also is an 1883 pensioners list - I think there are 5 volumes - available on google books. (this version is MUCH easier to use than the same books found on ancestry.com). Local county libraries, historical societies also have local regimental history. Also check various scrapbook collections at his. soc. I checked our scrapbook card file for a CW vets name, and found an 1880 roster that had been printed in the local paper, when they were erecting a monument. Each town in the county had submitted their CW veterans names and regiments. Also, once you know regiments, you can search online and so many people have dedicated many years to researching the regiments, and have loads of info online and SOOOO very willing to share. ALSO - how many researchers on this list have data on their own ancestor that they would be willing to share???? IF this project would be undertaken by a group of you (IT DOES TAKE MORE THAN ONE RESEARCHER -) decide in the beginning where the project will wind up - historical society? ) The project I am involved with will have a WALL OF HONOR in the historical societies main hall , listing all proven veterans names. For those killed in battle there will be a code and another code for those who died of their wounds. THEN any additional data we locate (photos, mini bios, b/m/d, obits, death certs., etc.) will go into a database, that will be accessible thru the history centers website. As I said we started with 2800 names for the two counties, and I have to prove which were from my county, which should be between 1363 and 1800. And all others will be deleted. Our list will only include those who lived in the county at time of enlistment. If anyone needs further sources, just holler - will be glad to assist all I can. I have learned more about the CW in the past 4 months, than I ever thought I wanted to know. Ruth

Ruth, I totally agree. On the top of that page, I think it says, July 12, 1861. The "1" looks just like the other "1's" in "12" and "1861". However, Ancestry has it listed as 1864. Also, that page is actually page 3 of 3 for the paper that day. The first page says 1864, the second page isn't dated. So, either the original printer got it wrong on the 3rd page (most likely), or perhaps Ancestry got the pages mixed up when scanning. Just to make sure we're all talking about the same districts, we have been talking about the districts listed in the 5th column over on that page. Karen P.S. <It is the page I wanted. In the fifth column over is the list of <districts and the men who's names were drawn for the draft. <By my count, there are 170 names listed. Priscilla, that could be an importan list of names for those researching their CW ancestor. You can prove the draft/enlist date by going to ancestry.com and searching their CW databases - their data should coincide with your article for enlistment dates and will also give you the names of the regiments they were mustered into. ALSO footnote.com has the pension cards for those drew pensions, and can verify the regiments. You can also google the names as: "A. J. Rogers" civil war (include the " " ) and you may be able to locate rosters with their names/and or regimental history. (I am researching 2800 names for my local county for my local county in Oh. for our CW project - if I can guide anyone to sources/search suggestions will be glad to assist. But do not have time to search for them myself.) Ruth Sprowls
Priscilla, what I read is: July 12, 1861 I have been working with a lot of old newspaper articles lately, and I really think that is 1861 - which makes sense. The cry for volunteers for the Civil War went out in April 1861 - it looks like the article with the list of names could be those who just enlisted from the 14th, 15th and 16th districts. Ruth
Priscilla, Are you able to see the names clear enough on the saved copy from Ancestry? Since the file isn't within Ancestry, you lose some of the zoom and magnify features. If you're able to see the names well enough, do you want to split transcribing the districts, and I'll do half? Are you able to do Districts 1-8, and I'll do 9-16? Priscilla, Could you possibly copy the names and send them to the list? Maybe someone has already researched some of them and would share with you and the Allegany County mailing list.</HTML>
Ruth, The problem is that July 12, 1861 was a Friday, according to the day calculator at: CalendarHome.com Day Calculator Looking at the paper again, I see other references to the year being 1864. Hi Priscilla, I'm so glad this was the right page you were looking for, and at least that mystery is solved. I think you guessed right on the few words you couldn't make out; I think it is the "5th inst" (meaning the same month); "Actual Physical Disability"; "Over age" (this one's tough to make out, but it makes sense, and it doesn't look like Old Age. Can you imagine that they only had 3 days to report to Baltimore, all the way from Allegany Co? That would seem hard even by today's standards. I checked the paper of July 6th (the day after the draft was made, and didn't see any names listed, so I imagine the 13th was their only notification. Perhaps, if we put our heads together, we can come up with an accurate list of districts for that period of time. I found this (below) at: Allegany County GenWeb - County Election Districts All but district number 17 were formed before the 1864 date of this newspaper, so I don't know which districts were split in order to make #17. Anyone want to jump on board here and try to figure out an accurate list of districts for 1864??? Districts of Allegany County Before the Formation of Garrett County No. 1 District Name: Glades (formed 1799) also known as: Armstrong's Glades Altamont (1867) No. 2 District Name: Selbysport (formed 1799) No. 3 District Name: Grantsville (formed 1817) also known as: Little Crossings until 1850 No. 4 District Name: Westernport (formed 1799) No. 5 District Name: Frostburg (formed 1799) originally: Musselanes No. 6 District Name: Cumberland (formed 1799) also known as: Court-House No. 7 District Name: Oldtown (formed 1799) No. 8 District Name: Little Orleans (formed 1817) also known as: Fifteen-Mile Creek No. 9 District Name: Flinstone (formed before 1828) No. 10 District Name: Ryan's Glades (formed 1835) No. 11 District Name: Accident (formed 1849) No. 12 District Name: Mr. Savage (formed 1852) No. 13 District Name: Cumberland (formed 1852) No. 14 District Name: Sang Run (formed 1852) No. 15 District Name: Oakland (formed 1860) No. 16 District Name: Lanaconing (formed 1860) No. 17 District Name: Barton (formed 1872) On Nov 6, 2010, at 9:53 AM, Karen E. I would bet the year on the newspaper is 1864 and not 1854 - Ruth
I am questioning the year of the article your are requesting - 1854 for the Army of the Potomac and a draft, military intelligence? Are you sure of the year? There was no war that I am aware of during this time, as the Civil War did not begin until spring of 1861. I am working on a CW project for Lake Co.OHIO and know that there was the Army of the Potomac, but don't think there was a draft in 1854. The heading for the column says: (From The Alleganian (Cumberland, Maryland) July 13, 1864) State Draft for Allegany County ----- The following is the official list of the names drawn in Baltimore, on the (5th inst.?), from the State enrollment list of the several districts of this county, made in 1862, to fill the quota of Allegany County in the 2000 militia, for one hundred days' service, called out by the Governor. The persons drafted are ordered to report at Camp Bradford, near Baltimore, 'in person, or by substitute,' on or before Saturday the 16th day of July. The only cause of exemption recognized or allowed to those drafted are '(actual?) physical disability' for the service required, and '(over-age?)' *from ' to ' written in italics As you can see, there are a few words that are unclear to me. Can any of you who have access to this page make them out? An exhilarating, fascinating and exhausting project would be to research each of the 170 men from Allegany County who's names were drawn from the State enrollment list. I recognize so many names from my hours and hours devouring the Allegany/Garrett County census records. Ah, if only I could clone myself, I would be able to do all that I wish. : ) Priscilla
