Another idea not cast in stone is the teaching that in some places, and at some times, women were not allowed and completely trusted legally to sign documents on their own. Thus the practice evolved to, when their names were required on documents, to have among their witnesses or co-signers, male members of their families. Thus it is worth examining the males on such documents with an eye to their name(s) being the maiden name of the lady also included.
Thanks everyone for the responses! According to my Family Treemaker program, I am the 1st cousin, 4 times removed, of Elsie Barncord -- although Barncord would not have been her married name but her original name. The Elsie Barncord I have in my tree was born 1895 and was the daughter of Henry O. Barncord. Would that be the same Elsie you're referring to? According to my research, the Barncords were originally the Bancords (and I've seen it spelled Bankard as well). Sometime between 1880 and 1900, the entire Cumberland family of Bancords seemed to have jointly decided that they'd henceforth be known as the Barncords -- so I'd like to find out why that happened. One of the Bancord patriarchs was Henry Bancord (1822-1869) -- who married Catherine Ann Gary (sometimes spelled Geary) (b.1831) in 1848. As for the STEIN name -- I'm researching the Cumberland family of Steins - Jacob (b.1834) and Elizabeth (b.1840) Stein who came over from Germany. Would like to find out more about that couple and where in Germany they were from (their kids were Pauline, Louis, Edward, Charles, and Elisa). Jacob and Elizabeth were my 4th Great-Grandparents. Not sure if any of their descendants or relatives ended up in Somerset County. jeff <jeff61@comcast.net> wrote: I know these families. The Muir / Percy Family that I reference came to Allegany County around the 1840's. They owned / ran the coal mines around Lonaconing. They are connected to the Sloan family mentioned in Allegany history. They are buried in Percy Cemetery in Frostburg, Porter Cemetery in Eckhart and Vale Summit Methodist Cemetery -----Original Message----- From: mdallega-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mdallega-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Johnatw@aol.com Sent: Wednesday, February 07, 2007 8:43 AM To: mdallega@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MDALLEGA] 1960's obituary Jeff, I have a lot of Muir's named Agnes, but none seem to be your Agnes that married Thomas Percy. My missing Muir is Janet Montgomrie Muir, b 1791 died ? She married Michael Muir 1814 in Riccarton, Ayrshire, Scotland. They were listed on the 1851 census in Riccarton. Family lore says they came to New York late 1851 or 1852. I can't find a record of Janet after the census. Someone else on the list wants to know more and replies to the list instead of to the sender and doesn't delete the first message . When this 2nd message appears on the list you now see the first message and the second message and any other messages you didn't delete from from the third message. Sometimes you need to leave enough of the first message to identify what you're interested in. Connie
I think you can get one of the maps from the Garrett Co. Courthouse. Address is: David K. Would there be copies at the court house of any maps or maybe at Frostburg University? Doret

John Willison Gracie and his wife Virginia (unknown maiden mame). John was alive and living at 433 Bond Street in Cumberland as late as 1951 according to the Polk directories. His wife Virginia was listed until the late 1940's. They also had a daughter living with them until the early 1940's named Nina. Nina would have been John's step daughter according to the 1930 census. Any help would be appreciated.
