    3. Boy-O-Day, I'm really frustrated trying to find my grandfather's brother, William McFarlane. My cousin (who has a treasure trove of very old papers and photos that were my grandparents) has his birth date as 7/23/1874 and a death date of 1/8/1943. I find him in our g-grandfather James G. McFarlane's household in 1880 and then can't find him again in Coney after that. There's a hit in Rawlings but I'm a little skeptical of that one although it does list some of his children with names the same as his siblings. I also can't find a draft card for him. Going from memory, my mother used to take care of an uncle (one of my grandfather's brothers) across the alley from us in Knapps Meadow. I thought she called him "Uncle Bill". She said she could hear his breathing before she got to the porch so I assumed he worked in the mine, at least long enough to get black lung. But anyway, you know how it goes, everyone that I could ask about him is gone. I'm going to try to phone my Aunt Evelyn Thrasher, Dad's sister, today to see if she remembers this dude my mother took care of; I'm almost positive it was "Bill"... but it could have been "Jim" I've been wrong before :-). She took care of him in the 40's. I can't find a draft card on this William R. McFarlane either. So frustrating! Sorry for the ramblings; sometimes it helps to bounce things off people. ~Chere

Has anyone heard of this or does anyone know if there are any records of occupants in the area known as "County Poor Farm". Also someone from the list sent an e-mail on the Ackerman location. I had checked this on the internet and had determined it was in Mineral County in the earlier years but can some one tell me if Ackerman is near Gerstell? Has Ackerman just disappeared or is it now another town? Anyway, Someone on this list recognized this family and called me late last night to explain it all. Seems Herman was a busy fellow. 2. Maria Brower
    3. Hi Joe, Try a mystery game, everyone loves a mystery. You can use the format for a scavenger hunt. We have a history class come in every year to the library and lean about local history this way. Print and number the questions on a sheet of paper for each player. Then the players need to search for the answers. In the meantime ask other family members for an ancestor story they want to share. They will meet new kin in the process as all ages will be involved. Have easy questions just for the younger children, maybe have some people in period clothes. Having questions about historical time periods they know about will spark their interest. Some examples of questions may be. 1. My father lived all his life in PA and my mother in CA. How did I get here? A. It was during WWII when my father ________,then 19 years old, was on a ship and came to the West Coast and met my mother ________. 2. This ancestor came from Scotland to Virginia before the Rev.War and fought Indians. Maria Brower, Grass Valley, CA, currently in Tucson >My family is going to have a reunion this summer. 3. I know there's at least one of our list members who is connected to the Hamiltons in Lonaconing. I hope you can identify this Dennis C. Hamilton's father, Herman Hamilton. I ask because I have a close cousin, Herman Hamilton, who is still living in the Frederick area, grew up in Cumberland, I think. He is one of my Hamiltons without a doubt. And he's the one who sent me the querie. Thanks for any help.
