Dick, I'm the one who asked Connie the question. I found this in the 1900 Census for Monroe Twp, Licking County, Ohio under Arkansas B. Butt. His son, Earnest B. was given as age 23, still in the parent's home with the occupation "Private U.S.A." Thanks very much for all the good info. I'm learning so much from our MDALLEGA mailing list. My cousins and I have been trying to find Pop's WWI draft card but haven't had any success (even with "Soundex"). Pop, Samuel B. McFarlane, was born Aug 11, 1891. He would have been about 27 in 1918. I wonder if coal miners had exemption? Chere, I think that you are on the right track with the William in Rawlings. I found him in Lonaconing in 1900 and in Rawlings from 1910 to 1930. The data remains consistent from 1880 through 1930. Another clue, though not conclusive, is that he named his first son James and first daughter Anna/Anne, the names of his parents. Speaking of names, in 1880, there is a Clara S McKenzie, Daughter of Thornton G and Mary M McKenzie, living in Rawlings. I would be willing to bet that she is William's wife. Both Thronton & Mary died in 1892 and are buried in the McKenzie cemetery. Below is all the census data.
