    3. >>>>Matt, can you please tell me which William Lybarger this is? My great-grandmother was Elizabeth Lybarger from Somerset Co. She had a brother William (b. 1880 in Larimer Township) that I've not been able to trace. I also have a few other Williams that I have no spouses for. I'm hoping one of these will fit. Sheryl >>>> My search of the LYBARGER family is minimal. However, I believe this William LYBARGER is the one on the 1920 Allegany County census (Cumberland, Williams Street) as being 58 years old, a laborer, born in MD, both parents born in MD. He is listed as a lodger in a family that I cannot read the name of. They might have given bad info or just guessed to the census taker, or the info may be correct. If 58 years old, he would be born in 1862. I just checked the 1910 Census, age 47, same birth info. Wife Laura was 62 (born 1848) in 1910! Born in Virginia, and that's interesting to me. I've been trying to find out how her parent's got to Westernport, but haven't been able to find out yet. The obits don't match the records I'm finding. 3. St. Paul's Lutheran Church was not there when most of these weddings took place - until ca. 1960 that was the site of the Roman house, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church was downtown on Baltimore Street (where the Downtown Dollar Store is today). It was, however, still within walking distance of the court house and many people did go there to be married. > St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Cumberland is just across the street from > the > Courthouse..well, maybe a block away.

    3. Lara, The address for the Board of Education is: 108 Washington Street Cumberland, MD 21502 Phone # is 301-759-2000 My mother taught at schools in Eckhart, Corriganville, Warrior Mountain and another school in Cumberland but I don't remember the name of it. I visited the Board of Education about 10 years ago and the copied the list of my mother's records and those of a Dando cousin. No problem then. Mother taught from 1928 until 1970, mostly at Eckhart School. I do have pictures of her and some other teachers who were involved with a new program. And I have a picture of her with students at Corriganville. Connie

    3. Doris Yes, I know the area. Cannot recall a school in that area. I do know of a school on 220N (Bedford Road, the MD side) before the Bedford Road VFD. It was a one room school house. Are you referring to that school by chance. The land was sold from my husband's family to the Allegany School Board. I cannot find much information about the school to date. However, I have heard about an existing photo of the class in front of the school. Haven't seen the photo yet. 3. Thank you to all who commented about the marriage records held by the clerk's office. I would like to look for church records as it seems that would give me the most information. My question is one I use to have the answer for and now can't find. Years ago I was told that there was a church in proximity to the courthouse/clerk's office and many walked there to be married since there wasn't a waiting period. What church was this? The marriage record I received recently had the parties married in a Lutheran church - St. Paul by a Rev. Yost. I'd thought the couple Methodist even though the wife's parents converted to Roman Cath. sometime before they died. Getting married in a Lutheran church might therefore have been a matter of convenience. The groom was living in Pittsburgh, PA at the time of their marriage - but, he was born in MD. Now, the sad news. Several kind people took an interest in my STEPPE search and tried helping me in the past week. I came so very close to finding a gentleman by this name that might have helped me. Unfortunately, he died earlier this month. To come this close makes me heartsick. Take it from me; if you have waited to write a letter, make a phone call or to delve into another branch of your family history don't put it off telling yourself you'll write etc. later. Later might never come! Sadly, Karen Nelson Hangsleben, TX

    3. Try the Board of Education. The files are private, but one of the workers may be willing to retrieve some information. Don't know how long they keep the files. Some offices are scanning everything into the computer and destroying the files or possibly sending them to the Hall of Records in Annapolis. If they have them, they may let you see the files if you are a descencant. However, a few years ago I emailed them and later and wrote a letter and received no response to either. The employee was very nice when I visited. I don't recall the address, but someone on line can probably provide it for you. Good luck. Alice > Where would I look for information on teachers

I am so sorry to be sending the obituary for one of my very "bestest" friends forever..... whom I met in Grade 6 and have loved like a brother all of that time. It is for Bill Steppe who died on March 8, 2007 from cardiac arrest. As you all know Bill has been marvelous through all of his diabetes problems and with the loss of his leg. Although he had heart problems, the death was sudden. I have been on the phone for a long while with Janet today. She is doing as well as anyone can during these circumstances. As we all know they had a long and beautiful marriage and family. The Fort Hill Class of 1954 will make a donation to Fort Hill in Bill's memory. After my talk with Janet, I would urge anyone who wants to make a personal donation to please make it to Fort Hill (with a notation of Library or Football or Track or National Honor Society or Stadium Committee) or to Janet and Bill's church, The First United Methodist Church, New Hartford, NY 13456 I personally will make a donation to the Stadium Committee. Also Janet's address for personal notes or sympathy cards is: 9416 Willowbrook Lane Sauquoit, NY 13456 the obituary will follow on the next e-mail............to bring it up please hit obituaries in the black area beside the funeral home name and then hit Bill's name for reading Again my heart is really heavy with this news. I can't find them in the 1860 census although some of their children Benjamin, John and Alexander (who married Susan Kerns) remain in Flintstone. 1. [MDALLEGA] marriage records
    2. Jocelyn
    3. In Ohio, marriage records have been kept by each county since the county was 'set up.' Please be aware, in Ohio, parents names were not required until 1 January 1899. If either the bride or groom was under age, parents or guardians were required to give their consent. Infrequently, the parent's names were recorded. But usually the record just says, "Parent's consent given in open Court," without naming them. MARRIAGE LICENSES WERE NOT REQUIRED UNTIL 1945. A couple could be married by any licensed clergyman if "Bans" were published in the church three times before the marriage. If the officiating clergyman didn't 'return' the marriage to the courthouse - THERE IS NO RECORD at the official level. Each state is different - but I've never found one, that required parent's names, before 1880. Jocelyn in Ohio
