    1. [MDALLEGA] GLENN/DAWSON families Westenrport, MD 1900
    2. Karen Hangsleben
    3. Looking for anyone who is researching a DAWSON family in Westernport, MD on the 1900 census. I believe that Libby B. DAWSON listed is the sister of Joseph GLENN and that they are originally from Springfield, Page Co., VA. Libby is listed as the wife of a James M. DAWSON with brother Joseph GLENN in their household. A good guess would be that Joseph GLENN becomes the 1st husband to Birdie GORDON between 1900-1903. There is some evidence that after their marriage they relocated to Pennsylvania where two children were born - Leonard F. Glenn @ 1903 and a sister Agnes Marie Glenn 1905. By 1910 Birdie is living with her two children in Page Co., VA. What happened to Joseph Glenn? If any of this looks like family - let me hear from you. Thanks to a great list and listers - Karen Nelson Hangsleben (TX)

    1. [MDALLEGA] Ellen Stover Clark obituary
    2. ~Pat~
    3. This is a little long, but what a wonderful tribute. She must have been a great teacher! One of the Oldest School Teachers in County, Dead- Evening Times; Cumberland, Allegan Co, MD - December 29, 1908 - pg 1 col 1 STRICKEN ON THE STREET While Returning Home from Making a call, Mrs. Ellen M Clark Suddenly Sank to the Pavement and Died Few Moments Later No death has occurred in this city in many years that so shocked the community as did the sudden passing away last night of Mrs. Ellen M Clark, one of the oldest and best beloved teachers in the city and county. Mrs. Clark had been spending the day at the home of her nephew, Mr. L Clark Madore, on Bedford street. While there she appeared in the best of spirits and seemed to be in her usual health. She left the residence of her nephew just as the clock in the tower of the German Lutheran Church was 'striking' the hour of nine. Her "good night" and "Happy New Year" parting salutation as she started down Bedford street were the last words she uttered on earth. When she arrived in front of the residence of Mr. David Zieler, about a hundred yards from the Madore house, she fell to the pavement. Passersby saw her fall and ran to her assistance and seeing she was ill they called Dr C H Brace, who residence is just across the street. Dr Brace responded at once and had Mrs. Clark carried to his office, where she expired in a few moments. Dr. Brace stated that Mrs. Clark's death was caused by a stroke of apoplexy. Mrs. Clark was seventy-four years old and was the widow of Oliver Clark, who died many years ago and was at the time of his death a prominent merchant of this city. He was a brother of the late A Jackson Clark, for many years agent of the American Coal Company at Lonaconing. Mrs. Clark was before her marriage a Miss Stover and was born in this city. She was cultivated woman and had spent the most of her life in school teaching and up until five years ago when she was put upon the retired list, taught the infant department of Union Street public school. Before the days of public schools, Mrs. Clark had a private school. A remarkable thing in the life of this noble is that she had taught three generation of the citizens of Cumberland. men and women who have passed the meridian of life were pupils of her private school. The second generation of her pupils include those she taught in the early days of the public school. These are now the men and women of the city between the ages of twenty and twenty-five are in the third generation of her pupils. Mrs. Clark is survived by two sons and one sister, Mr. Walter B Clark, the well known hotel man of this city and Mrs. Charles M Clark of Braddock, PA. her sister, Mrs. Henriette Krouse (actually Rosina Stover Crouse) resides in Reading, PA. She was a lifelong and devoted member of St Paul's English Luther Church and a member of the Eastern Star, Mc Kinley Chapter. The remains of Mrs. Clark were removed by Undertaker Stein to the Inn Hotel, owned by Mr. Walter B Clark. The deceased was very well known and just as well beloved as she was known. her life was spent in trying to good and the hundreds of young people growing into manhood and womanhood will cherish her name as long as live. The funeral of Mrs. Clark will take place Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock with services in St Paul's Lutheran church. Interment will be made in Rose Hill Cemetery. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. 2. ~Pat~
    3. These are obits I have collected in my family genealogy search. I will be posting others periodically. So many people have helped me in my research, I hope the obits will help someone else. Enjoy Pat Dailey Catherine Morgan Collins - The Evening Times, Cumberland, Allegany Co, MD (Lonaconing) - March 24, 1909 Yesterday morning all that is mortal of Catherine Morgan Collins was laid to rest in the Catholic cemetery at Westernport. Mrs. Collins died at her home at Rhee'sStation last Sunday. She was the widow of Dennis Collins, who died about four years ago. Deceased was born near Martinsburg, Va, March 17, 1844, and was married at Mt Savage 46 years ago. Afterwards the Collins family moved to Barton, where they lived several years and later moved to Franklin Hill, where they have lived many years. Mrs. Collins leaves these sons: Daniel, William, Thomas, Joseph and Dennis. Her surviving daughters are Mrs. James Pressly, Prescott, Arizona; Mrs. Joseph Shaffer, Cumberland, Mrs. Charles McDade, Westernport. Her sisters are Mrs. Michael Dailey, Mrs. Samuel Vance, of Franklin; Mrs. Margaret Tippen and Mrs. Ann Tippen of Borden Shaft, and one brother, Thomas Morgan of Franklin. Six nephews of the deceased acted as pallbearers: Lloyd, Thomas and Patrick Dailey, of Franklin; Frank, Harry and Grover Tippen of Borden Shaft. The flower-bearers were Wm and Joseph Vance. Those who attended the funeral from other places were: Patrick O'Connor, Mt. Savage; Michael McDade of Frostburg; Mrs. Patrick O'Donnell, Cumberland' Mrs. Mooney of Midland' Mr. and Mrs. Peter Nolan, Mrs and Mrs. Daniel Nolan, Misses Lizzie and Mary Nolan, Lonaconing; Mr and Mrs. Thomas Winters, Miss Clara Tippen. Charles Watson, all of Borden Shaft; Miss Maggie McGuire of Frostburg; Mrs. Margaret Collins and children and Edward Vine of Bloomington, and John Gannon of Barton. St. Peter's Church was filled with the relatives and friends of the deceased. Father Gallagher sand a solemn requiem mass, assisted by the choir, and Miss Bernadette Bell, the soloist sang two selections. Mrs. Collins was a good woman in every acceptation of the word. Kind-hearted and helpful, she was a benediction and a blessing to all who had the good fortune to know her. Her children followed in her footsteps. They are well respected and no family in Maryland has more friends than the Collins, of Rhee's Station. Many will miss the good woman who has gone to her reward. She was a devout Catholic. A consistent Christian and a good neighbor. She had remarkable memory and remembered well when the first steel rails used in the United States were made in Mt. Savage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter for private users. 2. Alice Eary
    3. Carolyn, Piney Grove School was in existence in 1900 in Garrett County, but close to Allegany County. Known mostly as Piney Run School, it was in operation until 1943. During its life span it had more than one location in the area but the most likely location when it closed was east of Westernport Road on the south side of Swamp Road. For two years (1934-36), in an effort to promote consolidation, Piney Run students were bussed to Lonaconing in Allegany County. I would welcome more information if it is available. 3. Matt, in the 1900 census, there is a William H. Lyberger married to a Laura, living on Mechanic Street in Cumberland. He was born in August 1862 in Maryland and is 37 years old. She was born in January 1849 in Virginia and is 51 years old. They rent. He is a day laborer. They have been married 11 years and have no children. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matt Combs" <matt_combs@hotmail.com> To: <mdallega@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 19, 2007 8:11 PM Subject: Re: [MDALLEGA] Laura LYBARGER >>>>Matt, can you please tell me which William Lybarger this is? However, I believe this William LYBARGER is the one on the 1920 Allegany County census (Cumberland, Williams Street) as being 58 years old, a laborer, born in MD, both parents born in MD. He is listed as a lodger in a family that I cannot read the name of. They might have given bad info or just guessed to the census taker, or the info may be correct. If 58 years old, he would be born in 1862. I just checked the 1910 Census, age 47, same birth info. Wife Laura was 62 (born 1848) in 1910! Born in Virginia, and that's interesting to me.
