.... 2 Albert L. Myer 1849 - ........ +Belle ??? I believe this is Isabella Moore daughter of Levi Moore and Nancy Ann Broadwater. She was born abt 1850 and died abt 1930. Per the marriage file posted on the MD Allegany Genweb site, they were married 23 Dec 1869. They are located in the 1870 census in Allegany County, District 4, page 3. I am currently trying to find all the Descendants of Robert Green b. 1770 who married Barbara Spiker. Nancy Ann Broadwater is a grand-daughter of Robert Green. I would be interested in any descendants you have of this couple. Mary Ellen about Rising Sun... I tried to reach you via _maryin61@sbcglobal.net_ (mailto:maryin61@sbcglobal.net) , but keep getting the mail back. Mary Ellen, I can empathize with your frustration at finding records of your relative. My gg lived in the same time period and also did not appear in census rolls or ever own property. I have found two ways to find information; tax lists and church records. Unfortunatly this usually involves making a trip to the locale or hiring a researcher. Tax lists were compiled by counties every few years. These list the men over 21 who are eligble for taxation. Sometimes these lists require ownership of real property( 1 cow or slave!), other times they list all men. These are usually found in courthouse archives... usually very dusty basements. Church records can be found if you know the denomination of the immigrant ,ie German: Catholic, Lutheran or Reformed. English: Church of England [Episcopal or Anglican], or Methodist. Scotch: Presbyterean or Methodist. City directories are usually later in 1800's and for larger cities. Ann
If you've 'lost' a man after 1860, try the following address. Its the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, run by the National Park Service. Hit Soldiers, then fill in the form with what you know and submit. You can try Sailors too. Jocelyn in Ohio http://www.civilwar.nps.gov/cwss/
You might try these two sites. Cyndislist has several listed, might be the area of your interest. The other site apparently has copies of the original directories for sale. http://www.cyndislist.com/citydir.htm http://www.uscitydirectories.com/ "The Ole Crow" Dick Crow "Retired & enjoying it!" rw.crow@verizon.net Cell: 603-490-0153 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara & George Grenier" <grenier@earthlink.net> To: <mdallega@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 29, 2007 4:05 PM Subject: Re: [MDALLEGA] City directories >I would like to track down several because of the 20-year gap between 1880 > and 1900 census records > > Barbara

I GOOGLED the name of the railroad my g grandfather worked for in the late 1800s in the Greater Cleveland area. Contacted them for direction to possibly get data on him. I'll check my files to see if I have any addresses still. However, that was several years ago. Not sure I still have them. However, I did try to find another g grandfather's records via GOOGLE but had no city directory data or correct surname spelling. He had emigrated to Rising Sun MD (Cecil County) area about 1850. Married around 1860 and followed the railroad expansion to Crestline, OH after the Civil War. Unfortunately, could find no records for him. All I had was oral history re: the railroad name. He died pre 1880. Unfortunately, MD civil records didn't start until the 1890s so have no records re: this paternal side of the family (marriage, birth, naturalization, etc.) until their arrival in Crawford County OH. They didn't seem to be around at census times either in MD!!!! Mary Ellen Chambers Lakewood, OH Rroost22@aol.com wrote: You say you use the railroad records where do you look this up? Not sure about one in our time line but in the late 19th century/early 20th, there was one a year in the Cleveland, OH area. Assume that most large cities had the same or similar time line in the USA. Ours listed the person, street address and occupation. Many times the surname was misspelled probably D/T illiteracy but still it assists one in tracking their ancestors and their families if they remained in the same area. Example: my g grandfather's name was misspelled but seeing the spelling it assisted me in using the census, the railroad records, death records, naturalization for him and various other family members. I imagine it would also assist with passenger lists if there were various spelling of the surname and even forms of the given name. Have added a new surname to my genealogy. Looking for others who might have the surname NOSE in their genealogy too. Looking for information especially regarding the marriage of Albert J. STEEPE to Ethel M. NOSE circa 1917 or so. Thanks for any replies. Karen Nelson Hangsleben, TX
Can someone tell me the history of the Road called Haviland Mill Road, that is in Clarksville, Columbia & Brookeville? My ancestor, Stephen Haviland, sons Stephen and Samuel, came from NJ to MD. In the mid 1790's Samuel Haviland/Heavilin m. Mary LaPorte/Layport in Allegany Co, before moving to Harrison Co., OH. I have been unable to locate information about my Stephen Haviland in Maryland, and believe this Haviland Mill Road may be a clue. thank you for any help you can give. Allegany College of Md. has several resources of Lutheran Churches in the Cumberland area. I found my great great grandfather born in 1838. It listed his parents names, so I was able to find information on them.
Folks, You will be happy to hear that Charley Often has sent more excerpts to me for posting on the Allegany County Site. He has sent excerpts from 1917-1999. These excerpts cover more years but are not as indepth as some of the earlier years. Never-the-less, there are many goodies to be had. In case you don't remember the URL of the link, here it is: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdallegh/cumbtime.htm Currently we are missing the years 1973-1976. These will be added later. Enjoy! Carol
Louann Nuthill house was demolished in 1840 and replaced by "House of Falkland" and is now a school. I tried to find a mailing list for you but could not. I also looked for a message board. There is a "general" board for Scotland that you may post a inquiry to. I decided to try the Genealogy Google site to locate Nuthill House for you. I am adding some of the URLS I found. They had copy rights warnings on some of them so I decided not to post what I found on this site I want to help but did not want to bring a problem to our board if I copied and pasted the info here. I was wondering if anyone has any information on the murder of my gg-grandfather, Douglas Love, Dec 6, 1868, at his home in Lonaconing. He was the boss miner for the Central Coal Company at the time. I am reading the book, The Best Dressed Miners, Life and Labor in the Maryland Coal Region 1835-1910, and he is mentioned in it. It is a fascinating book. Does anyone know where I can find out more information about it, or any other fascinating books about the area? Thank you, Louann Kiddy Creasy jcreasy@cfl.rr.com
