Connie, In the 1900 census of Cumberland, living at # 3 Prospect Street is the following Hamilton family: Lewis born October 1851 in Maryland; RR Manager; owns home free of mortgage father born North Carolina mother born West Virginia Sarah born September 1862 in Mass (parents born Mass) married 20 yrs one child Bertha M - daughter born July 1881 in Mass Daniel T Baker - servent 1862 Virginia Martha Coleman - servent 1848 Virginia Given the address, I'm sure this is the Lewis Hamilton who bought the house you mentioned. In 1880, Lewis & Sarah are in Brooklyn, NY. Hopefully this is enough information to see if this is your Lewis or not. Carol
Thank you, Carol, for the help. This isn't my Lewis Hamilton, darn it. He was born at and lived in Oldtown and he did have a few acres out on Warrior Mountain. Hugs, Connie
I have another Allegany County, MD land record that I don't need and am willing to send it to anyone connected to these families: David Mellinger; Elie Ridgley; and Archibald Thistle. This is land record Book K - Page 447 recorded 29 May 1820 - Mellinger sells land to Ridgley and Thistle. Let me know if you'd like to have this deed. cbeachy@hereintown.net
I have an 1884 land record, Allegany County book G - page 331 Records transfer of property in what is probably Garrett County, MD. Thomas CASTEEL purchases land from Nathaniel WALLACE - part of which is Military lot 3279. If you have an interest in these families and would like to have this document, let me know at: cbeachy@hereintown.net Connie
I found these on the page of a Layman family Bible. I forgot who was researching the Dawson family. I don't know if you already have this but here's what I found. I'm not sure of the relationship of which Layman married the Dawson. George Vernon Dawson April 30, 1927 John Glenn Dawson Jan 27, 1928 James Earl Dawson Aug 4, 1933
Glad to know we're still in business. Connie
Do any of you know anthing about a Lewis Hamilton who purchased one of the big buildings on Prospect Square, across from the Courthouse, in 1891, from Thomas and Ellen Healey? I have a Lewis Hamilton in my family tree but he doesn't seem to have been wealthy enough to buy this mansion. He was the right age though. Thanks, Connie

Hello All, I found a full-color map from the book "History of Maryland" (1904) that shows all of Maryland and Delaware in 1904 (pretty much the same as present). I plan to put the whole book online soon since it's in the public domain. For now the map in at http://www.midatlanticarchives.com Alan RESEARCHING: Buckingham, Gilpin, Eastburn, Jeanes, Nowland, Wade, Creswell, Vansant and related families -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Carol, We may have spoke before, I just don't remember, getting old, lol.... Did find this interesting, in the book it has Mary's birthdate as June 25,1855, On ancestry.com, the family trees has a Mary born June 25,1855 with her father as the William and mother Dorcas Catherine Duckworth. There were 3 Mary Miller's on the 1860 census in Allegany CO, MD as I remember, one is with William's family (that someone already sent you). This is most likely her since I doubt that 2 Mary's in Allegany CO, MD would have the very same birthdate. That is JMO, hopefully when you get the death cert and/or obit you will find out for sure. Sounds like you are on the right track. Hope you find out it is William and Dorcas with all the info that is available out there on the net.
