I don't know about when the fire was, it may have been around the time the 1890 census records were lost in a fire. Perhaps someone else has the answer. Hi Folks, Can anyone point me to a map(s) of Allegany County for the periods 1780 - 1830. Ideally, the map(s) would include towns, roads, streams and mountains; hopefully identifying them as well. Thanks for any help on this. Paul ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at AOL.com.

I attempted to obtain naturalization papers for my g-grandfather for the approximate time frame you are looking for info, and found that the only information available was from the index files. The actual documents had been lost in a fire that destroyed all of the Maryland citizenship records for that era. My g-grandfather applied for citizenship in 1848 and became a citizen in 1853. Assuming that the intent forms were the same for all states, the photocopy you have for that timeline is all there is. Unfortunately, at least here in Ohio, the intent has the date of arrival and the origin of the man. etc. There is very little detail. However, we noted that when we researched intent/naturalization papers in MA for family, although the wording and blanks were the same, more info was placed than in Ohio. That is, on the final papers, the place where the intent was filed was listed even if in another state. For place of origin instead of just Ireland, in many instances both the townland & county were stated. The ones we have from MD are similar to OH, just "Ireland", Victoria Queen, etc. Not much for a researcher with the exception of the dates. The intents & final papers of the 20th century are so much more detailed. Hillcrest does have an office at the cemetery. They have cards listed alphabetically with the names of those interred in the cemetery. When I researched the Twiggs buried there, I went to the office and requested all the Twiggs they had, which was over 100. Because the cemetery is so large and has the various sections, I put the Twiggs into my word processor and then printed them out by the various sections. By the way, did I mention the cards does not have the date of births nor the death dates included? My husband and I spent over 20 hours each in the various sections looking for the tombstones so we could fill in the dates. It is rather time consuming because the information you want will not be on the cards in the Hillcrest office. Sharon
