    2. Brant, Darius N
    3. Pat, Amy has been one of my unknowns also, potentially in the line of the pioneer George Nicholas Brant that I study. An Amy Brant appears in the 1830 Md census and there is an Alco marriage of (another unknown) George Brant to Amy Tracey in 1820. She may have been his widow. In general, I have found that many of my unknown Alco Brant marriages are descendants of pioneer John Brant of Somerset County ~1790. (This family is well documented in a book by Dr. Cobern [sp. ?], and Amy may be in there.) Those living in the southern part of that county apparently found it closer and easier to do business in Cumberland rather than Somerset. A similar situation occurred with respect to Bedford County where my patriarch George lived in Cumberland Valley Township and most of his descendants were associated with Cumberland and Alco rather than Bedford. 3. Connie: I spent alot of time in the Flintstone area when I was a young man. I remember many trails that were slick from Indian traffic. I walked the trails on Warrior Mountain and saw a area where 20 to 25 round rocks were in a circle, indicating a Wigwam or Tipis was located there. Also the fact that a abundance of water in the area would have provided fish and a source of drinking water for the Indians and the Game. I never did see where any local Indians were buried so I don;t know what they did with the body after Death, My GGrandfather;s Mother was Indian, living in New York, which I understand that Indians from Pennsylvania and New York used the Warrior Mt. trails to go South. I don't know if the Flintstone Indians stayed thru the Winter or went South to a warmer climate.. 3. > List: Would anyone know what Tribe of Indians lived in the area of > Flintstone? Thanks Lyell Most of the Indians who came down the Warrior Mountain trail in the Flintstone/Oldtown area usually stoped at Oldtown where Daniel Cresap lived. The Cresap home was called Shawnee Old Town. Since Warrior Mountain was part of the Indian's road to the southern states, it's for sure they had Indians in Flintstone since it's part of the trail. There were some tales in Twiggtown that Fleet Foot John Twigg married an Indian woman named Ruth FARMER, about 1784. Those who saw her black hair and dark complexion did not want her living in their area. Hilary Willison of Flintstone was the grandson of another Farmer girl, noting that she was a sister to Ruth Farmer and this family was not Indian. Not sure where that puts me since Ruth Farmer is my Great Great Great Grandmother. And Elizabeth Farmer Willison is also my GGG Grandmother And Samuel Bucy's wife was another Farmer GGG Grandmother. 1. Re: [MDALLEGA] MD Map
    2. Thanks, Connie... For anyone interested, there is an excellent treatment of this topic at Wikipedia under Yohogania County that details the development of the Virginia counties in the area. An old timer friend of mine, who was a West Virginia highway engineer, and a student of history and state boundaries told me two stories that I have never found documented anywhere. One is about the southern Maryland border - the Potomac - according to this tale, the boundary river was supposed to have been the south branch, which would have places several present WVA counties in Maryland. The other is that when the Mason-Dixon line was extended west to form the south-west boundary of PA. the surveyor misread the direction at one point - to go west to the Ohio River, and instead went NORTH to the Ohio river, creating the long spike of western WVA west of PA. I would like to know if anyone else ever heard these stories... Vince ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

October, 1935, "Boundaries of West Virginia" "The Maryland Boundary - In the Charter granted June 20, 1632, by King Charles I of England to Cecilius Calvert, Baron of Baltimore, the extent of territory therein adjacent to what is now West Virginia was described as within lines . . . passing from the said Bay, called Delaware Bay, in a right Line, by the Degree aforesaid (fortieth degree of north latitude), unto the true meridian of the first Fountain of the River of Pattowmack (ad verum Meridianis primi Fontis Fluminis de Pattowmack), thence verging toward the South, unto the further Bank of the said River, and following the same on the West and South, unto a certain Place, called Cinquack, situate near the mouth of the said River, where it disembogues into the aforesaid Bay of Chesapeake . . . Maryland, it will be noted, was to extend west to a north and south line passing through the first fountain or head of the Potomac River and was to extend south to the southern bank of' that stream. King James II of England confirmed a grant of the Northern Neck of Virginia to Thomas (Lord) Culpeper, September 27, 1688. This territory was "bounded by and within the first heads or springs of the rivers" Rappahannock and Potomac. Lord Fairfax subsequently succeeded to the rights under the grant. To settle boundary disputes arising between the governor and council of Virginia and Lord Fairfax, commissioners were named to determine the limits described in the Northern Neck conveyance. These commissioners chose the Northern Branch of the Potomac as the one on which to locate the first head or spring. At this head spring the Fairfax Stone was planted in 1746." Richard

The westernmost portion became Washington County, named after George Washington, the easternmost portion became Montgomery County, named after another Revolutionary War general, Richard Montgomery. The central portion remained Frederick County. 3. I can only tell you is that Virginia did indeed claim a large portion of the state of Pennsylvania that extended from the Ohio River to the eastern end of what is Somerset County, PA. Maryland wasn't involved with this. I don't recall when Frederick County, MD was formed nor do I recall what county it came from, but it covered all of the western part of Maryland. In 1776 Washington County was formed from Frederick County and it included all of western Maryalnd. In 1792 Allegany County was formed and it included both Allegany and what is now Garrett County, which was formed in 1872. 2. Would be curious as to which BIBLE family this was. Given the 1920's timeframe, I'm almost positive that this would have been one of the BIBLE families that came from the Pendleton County/ Grant County area of WV at about the same time as my grandfather's family. Were Maryland counties organized in this area? What were they? What became of them? Some of this same area was claimed by both PA and VA, and both had "official" county organizations collecting dual taxes from the citizens c 1769-1784... 3. I hope that someone will help me with an obit look up at Frostburg State Univ. I only have a partial date and they won't look it up with a complete date. I also tried the Enoch Pratt Free Library and their policy is the same. I'm looking for the obit of a Mae Steppe who died in Feb. 1983. Since this is a more recent obit it shouldn't take too long to look it up given there was more than likely an obit page in the same general area of each newspaper. Luckily February is a short month too! If you can I would be so grateful. Thanks, Karen Nelson Hangsleben (TX)

    3. ANOTHER SOMMERVILE - TWIGG HIT HER Mrs. Bible contends that Twigg struck her and knocked her down, discoloring her about the head. The plaintiff's testimoney that she gave no cause for the assault, was was corroborated by her husband. Bible said that Twigg drove a team through his property, breaking a locked private gate on the Oldtown Road beyond Twiggtown. During a dispute Rudolph Twigg is said to have struck Mrs. Bible twice in the face. Bible declared on the stand that he was afraid of Twigg, who he asserted was an "Outlaw." He admitted that he, the husband, being a membr of the Pentacostal sect which forbids violance, did not defend his wife. The defense went on the stand in the afternoon, denying the woman's story. There was much conflicting testamony. Bible and Attorney, W.M. SOMERVILLE, engaged in a debate as what time groundhogs come out of their dens. It caused some merriment in the courtroom. Mrs. Bible is represented by W. L. Richard and Geo. A. Legge, Jr. H.R. Donnelly and Geo. A. Somerville, the defendant. I don't have a date for this article but I think it may have occured about the 1920's. Connie

I can put it on a cd, but. Wasn't sure if they have a computer to read the cd. If they do, should I put each family on one, or put all the families that I have on one cd? Thanks. Carol Dinning
