    1. Re: [MDALLEGA] MD Map
    2. Hi R.P. You bring up a very interesting point about the property... Mr. Buckingham's posting of the book rekindled my interest in the origins of the state lines, which initiated this thread. I have yet to see his maps, and will seek them out. What I understand is that Cumberland County PA was formed in 1750, followed by Bedford County in 1771, and Westmoreland county in 1773, each taking some portion of the other. So we might find records about someone living in 1772 in the region that became Westmoreland in Bedford County, or in Cumberland County. Although most of the Mason-Dixon line was created 1763-1767, the dispute between the Colonies dates back into the 17th century. The question, perhaps answered in the book, is - Did both states have governing structures in the disputed territory, some 20 miles wide? Did they sell property, and collect taxes? Or did Maryland "control" the territory until they handed it over to Pennsylvania circa 1767. And exactly how did the presence of the line become enforced? Did the southern PA counties suddenly gain a 20 mile extension to their southern border? Where are the property and genealogy records stored? in PA or MD? In the similar case of the three counties Virginia created in what became western PA, VA imposed taxes, organized county governments, sold land - sometimes the same land sold by Westmoreland Co PA, and in general imposed, between PA and VA, two competing governmental structures on the people, from 1771 through 1785 or so. This is one of the reasons something over 50% of the settlers in the area lost their land to the government and moved on to points further west, like Kentucky. In VA's case, their set of records have moved on to the VA archives, while the PA records are with the counties, or in the PA archives. It is also why there are scores (60 some-odd) of recorded incidents of PA farmers tearing up roads, digging wide trenches across them, or burying them in tons of manure, to prevent travel to the various county seats where confiscated properties of their neighbors were being auctioned. Did this kind of activity also go on in MD? ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

    3. Is it a coincidence that Mr. Buckingham writes about his new postings, given this thread of conversation? Now available at his website http://www.midatlanticarchives.com/maps_md_statewide/ palitinate_of_maryland.html is a map showing the original borders of the colony, both extending along the south fork of the Potomac, as well as following the fortieth parallel in the north. If what I have read is correct, Mason and Dixon didn't fix the current boundary until at least 1765 west of North Mountain. The question for which I would like to see an answer is this. Many persons probably bought land from Maryland (before 1765) which as a result of Mason and Dixon ended up in Pennsylvania. The family of my ancestor John Perrin, and his friends in the Leazar family ended up half in Allegany County (around Flintstone) and half in Southampton Township, Bedford County, PA. What were the rules regarding property in situations such as this? R. P. Day On May 26, 2007, at 10:42 PM, Norman Collier wrote: > Vince, > > I think some of your story is true. 3. My father in law was William Kuhlman, born about 1911. His father was George Kuhlman and his mother Adeline. George's father was Bernard Kuhlman. Bernard had a son Bernandine (I probably am not spelling right) who became a Priest. Father Bernandine. He also had 3 daughters who all became nuns. Sister Leocadia, the other names may come to me. A daughter, Josephine, there may be others. Bill had brothers, George, Bernard, Jim, sisters, Angela, Mary, 2 more, I think, there were 8 kids in that family. My father in law and wife, Ursula Martz, lived on Martz Lane in LaVale, which comes off Vocki Drive. And I think their original homeplace was once part of the Vocke farm? But you may have all that. My husband was Lawrence (1926/1999). I have never really researched this line but would be interested in anything you would like to share. I know Bernard is buried at Sts Peter and Paul Cemetery in Cumberland and last I was there the stone was standing but very faint. George and Adeline are buried at Mt Savage. That's it in a nutshell. I live in LaVale. I was born in Frostburg so haven't moved far away. It is so nice to find someone researching Kuhlman. I know the family was in Cumberland by 1848/49 when the cornerstone for Sts Peter and Paul was laid. More may come to me. Sharon

Jocelyn in Ohio problem is I have no source! No 79 William Hendrickson to Mary Ann Drake December the third 1804.. I do hereby certify that William Hendrickson and his wife Mary Ann Drake of Short Creek Township was married by me October the fourth in the year of our [(Lord) is missing] one thousand eight hundred and four by License. James Roberts Justice peace Because these two were originally from Allegany Co., I'm hoping someone can help with the place of marriage. Any of your people come from Jefferson or Harrison Co., OH? I know that there's a Short Creek Twp. that's currently in Harrison Co., east of New Athens. Before Harrison was formed, though (in 1814), that part of the county would have been part of Jefferson, to the east.

    2. If someone has access to Allegany County marriage records in the early 1900s, I would be interested in a lookup.? I'm attempting to find a record for Myles Francis Thompson (b. 1888) and Hilda M. ??? (b. 1892).?? From what I have learned, their wedding probably took place in Cumberland, during the 1910-1915 time frame.? Together, they had a couple of children, before moving to Michigan (1916-1917) and expanding the family.? Thanks.
