You are O.K. in Germany. We had a couple of thunderstroms plus a little flooding here in Germany. I hope all is aright back there . You might want to visit the Allegany County Rootsweb page at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdallegh/Photos-old/NationalRoad.htm Connie
There were two houses named "Six Mile House". I found this description on http://www.rockygapgifts.com/history.html for one east of Cumberland on the east bound lane just beyond the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church that is in the median strip of I-68. "Six Mile House on U.S. Route 40, [Now I-68] six miles east of Cumberland, is a mid-19th century structure that was originally one of a number of taverns and Inns situated along the National Road in Western Maryland." The second on was found on http://www.rootsweb.com/~mdallegh/Photos-old/NationalRoad.htm "Six miles west from Cumberland there was an old tavern known as the "Six Mile House" It belonged to the Bruces, an old and wealthy family of Allegany county, Maryland, and many years ago was destroyed by fire. A new building was erected on the old site, and remains to this day in the occupancy of a nephew of the old tavern keeper, Aden Clary. This house is near the junction of the old and new locations above referred to, and near the stone bridge over Braddock's run. The sixth mile post from Cumberland stands on the north wall of this bridge, firm and unshaken. The bridge is well preserved, and a polished stone thereof bears this inscription "1835-Built by Thomas Fealy, Lieut. Jno. Pickell, U. S. Engineer, H. M, Petitt, Ass't Supt'd." The Six Mile House was across the road from the Braddock hotel which must have been owned by the Gehauf's at one time...or else they just ran the restaurant. The Six Mile House was just west of what is now Athey's Gas Station. I loved looking at that house everytime we went to Cumberland from Frostburg. Then I moved away and was gone for at least 10 years before I returned to Allegany Co. and got really mad when I saw the Six Mile House was gone. I remember a custard stand being in that location and then a gas station, then Burger King. The six mile House is different from the Toll House. The 6 mile house was located across from Gehaufs. BJ ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Connie, We had a lot of thunder and heavy downpours in spurts but we faired pretty well. Sharon
For those who wonder what we're discussing on line: We had really horrible thunderstorms Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Many people around here thought it was tornado's going throutgh. It wasn't. Not to say that tornados never visit Allegany County. They did attack a few years back leaving damage from western Garrett County to Allegany County, with much damage. Connie
A lot of trees went down but nothing serious on Tuesday night. Surprised me. I was here alone and the thunder itself could have shaken everything lose...so I was surprised to get up yesterday and find the sun shining and just some tree limbs in the yard. Several people I know told me that they were on their way home and the wind blew them all the way to Midland. They live on Dan's Mountain and made sure everyone went to brother Mark's house, across the street from them, where they huddled in Mark's cellar until the thunder stopped. The Cumberland Times didn't write all that much about it. Now, there was actually more damage last night. At least one car was stuck in water in that underpass on Virginia Blvd, and several other places had flooding. Other people on this list may have experienced more damage than here in LaVale. Sharon, I'll mail the Wednesday and Thursday papers to you. So how did you make out down there? Connie > Connie, > > You came through fine. I feel for all of you with those storms. They sound much like some of the weather Iowa was having. At present it has been dry for a week and we could use a nice shower, but I won't complain. Dry is better than ponds everywhere. Thanks for your reply. Connie
Minnesota received it fine...we had tornado alerts and some touched down a couple of times last week. It happens in the southern part of Minnesota all the time, hardly ever reaches up here near the Canadian border.
Youv'e made it to Florida too! Connie, You came through fine. I do have a question since the list is so quiet. On the early Channel 2 news in Baltimore on Wednesday morning, they said a tornado had touched down in Flintstone, MD on Tuesday evening and they had a crew on the way out to Flintstone to see what the damage was. They were to report the results on the Wednesday evening news. As you know Wednesday's weather became such a news event with severe thunderstorm warnings splattered all over the area, that I didn't hear anything on Channel 2 about what was found in Flintstone from Tuesday's tornado touchdown. They may have reported it but if they did, I missed it. Do you know if there was an damage around Flintstone? Sharon
