James Grant Macfarlane was my supervisor at work for many years. Somewhere I have his obit, but I will have to do some searching. His wife, Jean, died at a rather young age, early to mid fifties. He had two children, Jimmy and Dorothy. The last time I heard Jimmy lived maybe down around Virginia, but not sure. Dorothy was still in Cumberland the last I heard anything of her. I believe she was married to a Kegh at one time time, but then divorced. I think she had two children, a boy and girl. I started working with Jim in 1969. He was a probation agent in Cumberland. After the retirement of the supervisor, he became the supervisor until he became ill, and retired. I can't remember exactly when he died, but I think in the late 80's. Jean's brother owned a paint store in Cumberland, and I believe it was family owned. Sorry I can't remember more details. Hope this will help you and others looking for information. Could someone please tell me if the book published by this lady is available? I understand that it is a very large book and not easy to copy so I would be interested in purchasing it if it is available. Thanks. Service in any branch of the service during the Civil War entitled the individual to citizenship. Any "Court of Record" could issue such citizenship. You won't find a 'certificate,' because the certificate was given to the new citizen. A soldier's citizenship entailed the following: Service in the armed forces of the United States was used as the waiting period. After honorable discharge, followed by a one year wait, the immigrant made his application for naturalization. Two character witnesses were required. Jocelyn in Ohio
This is what we thought. However, last year when we were looking for other family naturalization at the MA branch of NARA, we were told this was not routinely done at the time of the Civil War. However, if a child was an emigrant, when he became of age he had only to appear in court once to become a citizen. That was why we found only final papers on the two older brothers, one in MA & one in MD. It is the youngest, my husband's grandfather we can't locate. What is your source so I can use it when we go down to the MD Archives & DC, the next time. I so love to be able to quote, it does get results many times much faster!! Thanks. Thanks Judy but they came through Baltimore in 1850 with their Grandmother Ellen nee LANE LYNCH. When I say they, I mean my husband's grandfather and his two brothers. The little boys were left in County Waterford until their parents got settled in America. By 1850, the father was a C&O canal boatman and had a little farm in Greenspring Furnace, Washington County. Looking for parents of Benjamin Franklin LEWIS born 02 Nov 1882 in Frostburg, MD. married Bessie (maiden name unknown) and living in Peters Twp., Washington Co., PA in early 1900s. I found a 1900 census for Washington Co., PA for: David L. Thank you. JoAnn Cupp Grass Valley, CA
In all the census, there was no date listed just a check that he was naturalized. He & his brothers were brought over to join their parents in 1850, long before Ellis Island. We had thought that since he was in the Civil War perhaps he automatically became a citzen after the war. However, that type of citzenship we were told did not happen until recent times. His brothers were naturalized in the 1870s, one in MD & other in MA. Tried both Washington County (we have that book which lists naturalizations to 1880 and Cumberland on this past Thursday. We know he held public office by 1880 and had a business in Frostburg, by 1880. In our search at the Cumberland courthouse, we found about 4 COSGROVE. One was Patrick COSGROVE in the 1850s. That surname cought our eye because one of my husband's MCALLISTER ancestors married a COSGROVE in the late 1800s. We know the timeline so we checked EVERY book with pre & post the timeline without success. He was a judge & magistrate so must have had to be a citizen. Mary Ellen, My Francis Cosgrove was naturalized in Blair Co. PA but there is a document in Cumberland to prove that. We still have no idea why he went that far north to be naturalized in 1857. Also, prior to 1922 women and children automatically became citizens when their husbands/fathers did, so if this person came to the US as a child (I missed the original post, so don't know the circumstances or time frame) he may never have filed papers himself. Then you'd have to investigate the father..... They usually have the naturalization date, if some one was indeed naturalized, on the census. Check that out first. This would give you a time period and make it easier to check. Also run their name thru Ellis Island if they are in the correct timeperiod.
First, a special thanks to Connie Beachy for all her help on Thursday last. Does anyone have any idea where else we can look for a copy of Naturalization papers if they are not at the Cumberland Courthouse? We searched their records on Thursday but found nothing. The person whom we are seeking papers must have been naturalized because he was a public figure and ran for public office at least on 3 occasions. We have checked out Washington County with no luck and since he spent his adult years in Allegany County we felt they would be there. Any ideas or could his record be among those which on a former messege someone said burned?? Mary Ellen Chambers
