    3. It's Friday! Have a good weekend - this is a great site. I have my husband's great grandmother's diary at this site - Ellen Chissell came to America from England in 1874 and kept a diary of her voyage on the USS Oceanic to Castle Garden. A really good read - spelling has not been altered. Does not connect to Maryland. http://immigrantships.net/v7/1800v7/oceanic18740422 02.html Judy ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sharon Banzhoff" <shabanz@earthlink.net> To: <mdallega@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007 8:33 PM Subject: Re: [MDALLEGA] Naturalizations > Talk about feeling "stupid" - I didn't even realize the little dashes were > arrows until I put on my glasses. > > I am now navigating through Castle Gardens and want to thank Judy and > Theresa for responding - sorry I didn't take time to figure the arrows > out > before bothering everyone. > > Sharon > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > MDALLEGA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. if you look at the right side of the search - where it says results 1- whatever results it says Pages 1- whatever and then there is an arrow to let you navigate to the other pages - took me a while to figure it out as well. Not a user friendly search results page but worth its weight in gold!

    3. Judy- I accessed the following site you referenced: http://www.castlegarden.org/ "CastleGarden.org offers free access to an extraordinary database of information on 10 million immigrants from 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. Over 73 million Americans can trace their ancestors to this early immigration period." The PROBLEM I am having: I entered a name that came back with 4618 results (pages 1-462). The first pages shows 10 results. There is NO "NEXT" option to click onto to see the rest of the results. Did anyone else run into this problem? I cannot get past the first page. Sharon

    3. Sharon. Did you click on the little arrows to the right of "Pages 1-462"? It worked for me. To test, I typed in Ireland, came up with pages 1-14. 3. All, I have written a genealogy computer program that I would like you to try out and give me some feedback. I just finished writing it a little bit ago, and need people to test it out. I am curious as to which operating systems and internet browsers it works with. I call it "Surname Suggestion List". More information can be found at http://home.triad.rr.com/combsfamily/sslmain.html . I have tried running it on Windows Vista Professional and Windows XP both running Intenet Explorer 7.0. I am particularly interested in seeing if it works with other web browsers and figured I might get some good feedback from the folks on this list. The download of the program is free. However, after 15 days, the user will be limited to 1 search each time they run the program if they have not donated. I wanted feedback on that as well. Of course everyone loves free unlimited, but no-one would give if they could use it all they wanted for free. Try it out and let me know what you think (good or bad - I can take it). 3. Matt, What a great idea for a program! I downloaded it and gave it a try. I am using Windows xp as my operating system and Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4 as my internet browser. The program installed perfectly. I opened it and typed in one of my surnames "Langford". I received three names in the "Excellent" column one of which was the name as I had typed it in the search box. I have seen the variation "Lengford" but that did not appear. There were no other names in the "Close" or "Longshot" columns. I highlighted one of the alternate spellings and then clicked on "Google Search" ~ nothing at all happened. Went through the same process with other surnames and received pretty good results with the name variations but the same thing happens when I do the "Google Search" ~ nothing. Firefox in tricky when it comes to some things and I have had trouble with webpages before. I hope this has been helpful. Linda Richards Tucson, AZ

There is a book on the Melungeons. They had blond hair and blue eyes. Some say they are the decedents of Virginia Dare or Norris men. Check on Amazon for the book. There were Mandarin Indians who were blonde/blue eyed, lived in Northern KY/Southern Indiana, moved to Missouri, helped the Lewis and Clark expedition in the Dakotas, I believe. Wiped out by measles, or something like that. Believed to have descended from Prince Madoc of Wales, who came before Columbus - several expeditions up the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, wrote about the expeditions back in Wales, where his writings have been located. 3. Try the Eichorn funeral home - it is on the main street in Lonaconing, right before you get to Douglas AVe. My great great grandmother Mary Kirkwood Hamilton died in 1914 and Eichorn handled her arrangements. AS they did for all my family, I believe. My Hamilton and Allerdice ancestors also lived on Douglas Ave. ruth Sprowls

    3. Melungeon >From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Melungeon is a term traditionally applied to one of a number of so-called "tri-racial isolate" groups of the Southeastern United States, found mainly in the Cumberland Gap area of central Appalachia: eastern Tennessee, southwestern Virginia, and eastern Kentucky. "Tri-racial" refers to populations of mixed (1) European, (2) sub-Saharan African, and (3) Native American ancestry, and "isolate" refers to "genetic isolate," that is, a group that has maintained to some degree a distinct ethnic identity, though is not necessarily isolated in a geographic or cultural sense. Although there is no consensus on how many such groups exist, estimates range as high as 200. [1] Some self-identifying Melungeons dislike the term "tri-racial isolate", believing that it has pejorative connotations, although the term "Melungeon" itself was considered pejorative until the late 20th century.
