>>>> I have been in the computer security business for over 20 years and although this software program may be totally legitimate <rest snipped out> >>>> Ken, All I can say is WOW. I have been a consistent contributor to the genealogy efforts of Allegany County and surrounding counties since 1995. I have been a software developer and consultant for 19 years. I am a native of Cumberland, Maryland and I am a graduate of Fort Hill High School and Frostburg State University. I AM ABOVE REPROACH, and I believe others on this list will back me up. Your comments promote nothing but fear, uncertainty, and doubt. I wrote what I think is a great program and offer it first to the great folks on the Allegany and Hampshire County lists. I knew they would respond in an a great manner, and they have. To imply that my program is anything less than an offering of my heart to the genealogy community is uncalled for. You have knocked my efforts, and I will not stand for it. While I agree that taking good security efforts is always a good thing, I think you denigrated me and my efforts through your unkind comments. It hurts me to be treated this way, especially on a list that is near and dear to me. Matt _________________________________________________________________ Live Earth is coming. I have updated the software to work with the Firefox browser. A new version of the program is available on my website for downloading at http://home.triad.rr.com/combsfamily/sslmain.html . Thank you all very much for the feedback. If you are running the AOL web browser, could you download the new version and see if it now works for you? I think it is a neat little program, and I hope you enjoy it. Matt _________________________________________________________________ Play free games, earn tickets, get cool prizes! Matt's software does exactly what he says it will do and NO MORE ~ there are no built in trojan horses or spyware as evidenced by my AVG ROUTINE scan ~ I did not run AVG because I had any fears about his program. I don't know Matt but I've seen his name on this board for years and would not suspect him of having nefarious motives. If you don't trust the source of any software ~ don't run it and unless you have proof of a problem don't create one for someone who is trying to do a good thing. Linda Richards Tucson, AZ

I just finished writing it a little bit ago, and need people to test it out. I am curious as to which operating systems and internet browsers it works with. I call it "Surname Suggestion List". More information can be found at http://home.triad.rr.com/combsfamily/sslmain.html . I have tried running it on Windows Vista Professional and Windows XP both running Intenet Explorer 7.0. I am particularly interested in seeing if it works with other web browsers and figured I might get some good feedback from the folks on this list. The download of the program is free. However, after 15 days, the user will be limited to 1 search each time they run the program if they have not donated. I wanted feedback on that as well. Of course everyone loves free unlimited, but no-one would give if they could use it all they wanted for free. Try it out and let me know what you think (good or bad - I can take it). >>>> What a great idea for a program! I downloaded it and gave it a try. I am using Windows xp as my operating system and Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.4 as my internet browser. The program installed perfectly. I opened it and typed in one of my surnames "Langford". I received three names in the "Excellent" column one of which was the name as I had typed it in the search box. I have seen the variation "Lengford" but that did not appear. There were no other names in the "Close" or "Longshot" columns. I highlighted one of the alternate spellings and then clicked on "Google Search" ~ nothing at all happened. Went through the same process with other surnames and received pretty good results with the name variations but the same thing happens when I do the "Google Search" ~ nothing. Firefox in tricky when it comes to some things and I have had trouble with webpages before. I hope this has been helpful. Linda RichardsTucson, AZ >>>> Linda, this feedback has been very helpful. It is exactly the kind of feedback I want. I don't have Firefox installed, but I'll try to find one locally and see why it isn't working. I just got hired for a computer consulting contract in Asheville, NC and start Monday, so it may be a little while before I can do that. Regarding Langford/Lengford, both are phonetically pronounced as LNKFRT. The reason Lengford didn't show up as a suggested name is that Lengford is not in the database of surnames I created. I created it with the top 90,000 surnames from the census bureau. Langford was in there -- 1659th most popular surname, with approximately 24,160 persons in the US with that last name. I will add Lengford to the database in the next release. If you find any other surnames not in the database, let me know. The 90,000 surnames is only from a representative sample of the US. They did not ask everyone, so some names will be missing. Matt _________________________________________________________________ Live Earth is coming.
