Seems to be alot of insulting going on this list. Matt, I never intended to say anything degrading against you or the program that you have provided. I thought that I caveated that in saying I did not know whether it is legitimate or not (not knowing you) - I thought I was doing a service by making others on the list aware that some people without good intentions have hundreds of times in the past offered up free software as a ruse to embed malicious software into your system. This has even occurred without the developer of the knowing after the bad guy has downloaded the software, added the malicious code and reinstalled it for everyone to use. What I recommended is just a good security practice to use anytime you download software from an unknown source - as anyone who has acquired a virus that way will know. My wording may not have been the best but my intent was to help. I apologize if what I have said earlier was taken in any other way. Ken

Thanks Chere. I felt it might be a road somewhere off Main St. We have driven up Douglas Ave. & on up the mountain. Sure is difficult to get back down!!! Just strange that the reporter would say a street name in the Evening News rather than a town's name. But, that was 1909 and he probably figured everyone knew from whence he was speaking :-) Never thought almost 100 years later a descendant of someone would be nosing around trying to get to know their ancestors. Matt - Just consider the source. I doubt if anyone on this list was worried about the 'safety' of your program. It works very well and I've been suggesting it to a good many of my friends. Programs like yours are what makes 'on-line' genealogy rewarding. Jocelyn in Ohio
I am working on my uncles tree at this time. His Mother was Zelma May THOMPSON 1910- Nov. 23,1962. Her parents are William THOMPSON and Margaret MCcONNELL. I think this family lived near Clarysville, Allegany County, Maryland. His Father Operated the Clarysville Inn in the 1930's so that is why I think his Mother Zelma May THOMPSON was from the Clarysville area. Anyone working on this family? Last week I was in Cumberland, I Went to ACC to look at Hazel Groves Hansrote's Microfilm films and found this information. Hazel Worked on Obituaries for Years and now we can go to any LDS church and ordered these films There is 5 rolls of films in the group. So If you can't find the death date for your loved one She might list it in this Group of Microfilm. Joseph Mckenzie in Florida

I have been in the computer security business for over 20 years and although this software program may be totally legitimate, I have seen this very same approach used by hackers over the years to get people to use free software that has what is called " a trojan horse" (pieces of software that allow someone else to access your computer remotely, get your passwords used, and to use it to spread viruses or break into other computer systems) "without you ever knowing it is happening." And, unless Matt has taken precautions to block modifications to his program, other nefarious people out there could modify his program without his knowledge. This is not meant to knock Matt's efforts, just to recommend using some basic security. I highly recommend that anyone who uses the program run a virus scan and antispyware scan on their computer afterwards. I just finished writing it a little bit ago, and need people to test it out. I am curious as to which operating systems and internet browsers it works with. I call it "Surname Suggestion List". More information can be found at http://home.triad.rr.com/combsfamily/sslmain.html . I have tried running it on Windows Vista Professional and Windows XP both running Intenet Explorer 7.0. I am particularly interested in seeing if it works with other web browsers and figured I might get some good feedback from the folks on this list. The download of the program is free. However, after 15 days, the user will be limited to 1 search each time they run the program if they have not donated. I wanted feedback on that as well. Of course everyone loves free unlimited, but no-one would give if they could use it all they wanted for free. Try it out and let me know what you think (good or bad - I can take it). Matt

Matt, Using Windows XP and Mozilla it works great. My only suggestion is to add the following variation for the name AVERY: "EARY." I found my great grandparents on an 1870 US Census Report and their name, which is AVERY, was recorded as EARY. I guess their Northumberland British accent was a bit thick for the census taker. :-) And since I can't seem to find these elusive AVERYs on the 1860 census I can now try all the versions your software program suggests. Thanks. Nora Florida Matt Combs wrote: >>>>> I use Windows XP. Yes the search engine worked and all went well. I use internet explorer as my search engine.Linda>>>> Linda, thanks for your feedback.
