do you have access to census records that you could supply names of children? I don't have time to search this myself, and don't know the family, but will be glad to search papers if names/dates/locale can be supplied. Ruth
It is more widespread than you think. I've found them in odd places, even in societies and public libraries. Keep looking for them. I would like to know if I can look at the WPA Survey Files that were made in the 1930's for Allegany County Churches Cemeteries on line? If so I can't get this site to work. Joe Mckenzie

Contra is the same as assigned. Like when you are transferring a deed.

Hello List members, Please, can anyone help with information regarding James Lewis FAZENBAKER, b. 11 May 1885. James married Rebecca S. BEEMAN, her sister Freda (Cleda) BEEMAN and Anna Catherine BITTINGER? I am looking for approximate marriage and death dates, and children of each marriage. Does anyone know where James and/or his wives are buried? I am very grateful for any information shared, all information is deeply appreciated. Thank you. I found Nottingham Company in the 1780 time frame and also a Nottingham Iron Works. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stephanie" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 14, 2009 11:53 AM Subject: [MDALLEGA] Land Deed Questions Hello, I am hoping someone on this list can answer a few questions regarding a land deed in Maryland. I have a document where Josiah Lee is purchasing 365 acres for 2530 pounds from the state of Maryland. It says this is land confiscated from the Nottingham company, the date is 1781. There is also the word "contra" at the top of the page. Can someone tell me what Contra is? Would this be a large land purchase being 365 acres and 2530 pounds for a man in his 30s? We are trying to determine if this is Josiah Lee Sr. or Jr., I feel this would be a lot of money and land for a younger man. What was the Nottingham Company? I'd appreciate some thoughts from people familiar with this area. Thank you very much. Stephanie Miller, Oregon

Our friend Gregory Bittinger has the "Shade Mills Day Book" now online. This book dates from 1857 to 1860 with daily logs of sales with customers names, what they purchased, prices etc. If you are interested in purchasing this "e-book" in download form or on disk go to http://www.treasurequestxlt.com/shademills.shtml<http://www.treasurequestxlt.com/shademills.shtml> Genie Editor by Default OurBrickWalls.com
Thee are 3 cemeteries in the area you mentioned. At the intersection of Baltimore Ave and Shades Lane there is a Jewish cemetery and just west (I think.... anyway uphill from it) is a Lutheran cemetery. At the top of the hill at the intersection of Balto. Ave and Yale street is Greenmount Cem. I am pretty sure this is right but haven't lived in Cumberland for 54 yrs. Used to shortcut thru two of these cemeteries on my way home from school.
