    3. I've found the Allegany rootsweb site (I thought I had saved this, but evidently didn't), however, when I try to access the census years, I get a "Page Not Found" message. Are they in a different place now, and maybe no longer accessible? Thanks for any direction. Susan Drake

    3. Hello All, I need some help identifying some folks in an old family photograph. Most are family, but the group of girls to the bottom left include members of the choir at St. Michaels. http://www.flickr.com/photos/keating/3370612472/ This image is from the wedding of my grandparents, John William Keating and Sara Elizabeth Pope. It comes from a scanned negative and is a group shot from the wedding and reception that I'd never seen before scanning it in. The date is 7 October 1933. I'm trying to identify everyone in the wedding picture. If you move your mouse over the picture, you'll see notes indicating who I've identified so fa, which you can then move your mouse over. Please feel free to add your own notes or write a comment below the picture. You can see a larger image by clicking on the "All Sizes" button above the image. Thanks for any help! Cheers! John III

    3. So glad you are enjoying the minutes Dick - I too found them quite interesting. The only problem I found was when I clicked the link to go back to the years that google had originally sent me to, I got an error messag. And that seemed to continue with some years that followed. I am trying to figure out why some years are not able to be viewed. Or possibly just a temporary error? Ruth

    3. Ruth, I really enjoyed reading what the County Commissioners did in those days. I also found ancestors names in some of them. I also saved it to read it later because it is so interesting. 3. I found this several years back, as my g-g-grandfather was listed as an Outside Pensioner. Description of "Outside Pensioner" from the 'Archivists Bulldog" Newsletter of The Maryland State Archives. BADGES FOR OUT PENSIONERS by Pat Melville The dictionary defines an outpension as a "public pension granted to one not required to live in a charitable institution." This method of caring for the poor is the predecessor of the modern welfare system. During the colonial period and through the 19th century, county governments in Maryland provided at public expense annual allowances to individuals unable to work or to the persons who cared for them. To prevent fraud and, perhaps, to discourage unworthy applicants, the recipients of the outpensions, during the colonial period, were required to wear badges. Refusal or neglect to display them in public could result in severance of the pension. Notations about these requirements appeared periodically in the minutes of the Anne Arundel Court in (Judgment Record) in series C91. In 1734, Amos Woodward received a contract to provide 36 white badges with the letters AAC in red. By 1750, the number of badges had increased to 60 and by 1754 to 100, presumably reflecting the anticipated number of outpensioners. In both years, Patrick Creagh held the contract to furnish the badges. The badge concept was continued as county governments established almshouses for housing the poor, beginning in 1768. Residents were required to wear badges marked with the letter P The Outside Pensioners were listed in the newspaper every year and the amount they received was listed with their name. 3. This is incredible stuff. I have just started to look at the minutes from 1839, and learned about Lewis Crabtree's lunatic son. Preceding this was a list of 80- odd roads to be maintained. The initial pages of the first file (starting in 1813) has lists of land owners who were delinquent in their taxes. There is a lot to be mined in these documents, and I can only thank the County for putting them on line, and Ruth for calling attention to them. 3. OH Maria - I am so happy for you in locating information on your husbands family at the Canadian website. That is why I post links as I find out about them. This is great news. You have made my day. I can just imagine you doing a HAPPY DANCE when you found the info. That is what these message lists are for - all of us sharing what we learn and what we find and assisting each other. I too wish Connie blessings and hope all the best for her. We all just need to pick up where she left off, and continue as she was doing. Ruth

    2. Ruth, Thank you so much for posting the link to the Canadian web site. I found the link worked fine last evening, in fact I was on it for hours. I found some info on my husband's ancestors that I have been looking for for over 25 years. I was able to access two Canadian censuses that I could not on Ancestry.com because I only subscribe to U.S. records. I will use that site a lot in the future. I also found two great uncles whom served in WWI and I may try and get at least one service record. Their original application was on the site and was helpful. Thanks again. This list is the best and always has been. I too have missed Connie and wish her the best. I hope that maybe some of the meds will help. 3. Sharon, when I was in Frostburg this week I called the hospital on Wednesday and she wasn't there then. I was going to go down and see her, as I have visited with her at her house before. I called the house and the answering machine still has her son saying Connie isn't available and referred me to a number for him. I didn't call that number thinking they may be really busy getting Connie ready to move to Washington State. It is a shame we've lost her on this list. She was a God send to helping people. She will be sorely missed and irreplaceable. I will miss my cousin Connie. Linda Harden-Lantz
