The tornado story reminded me of a story told to me back in the 1990's when we visited the Uppermans who lived on the old Abraham Moon homestead in the Bethlehem area of Garrett County. Their house sits on the same foundation as to old Moon home. Mr. Upperman told us a tornado had struck there years ago, though I don't recall that he mentioned the year. Anyway, the story went that the house was picked up, turned 1/4 turn, and set back down on the foundation. The family bible was laying open on a stand inside an open living room window and not one page was turned. Possibly that may have been the same tornado that struck Cumberland in 1944, but I don't know. The 1944 article did mention that Garrett County was also hit, but didn't say exactly where. Someone sent me a request for a copy of the article. When I sent it I didnot send it direct to the party and it went to the List and thus bounced back. Here is a website that measures worth from 1774 to the present.... http://www.measuringworth.com/uscompare
Dick, I have a website that calculates $$$ then and compares them to now.... Here is the answer to your question: Wonder what it would be today? Current data is only available till 2008. In 2008, $35,000.00 from 1891 is worth: $854,376.98 using the Consumer Price Index $795,074.85 using the GDP deflator using the value of consumer bundle $4,339,492.75 using the unskilled wage $6,855,020.49 using the nominal GDP per capita $32,399,669.86 using the relative share of GDP The 2008 observations for U.S. nominal GDP, nominal GDP per capita, population and GDP deflator are preliminary numbers that will change. Data for consumer bundle only starts in 1900. Data for unskilled wage is only available through 2007.
I hope that all of you that have requested a copy of the news article are enjoying it. I was only to happy to provide the copies for everyone. The cost of the damages was $35,000, I wonder what the cost would be today? Dick Crow "The Ole Crow" Retired and enjoying it! "Fair Winds and Following Seas."

I am trying to learn more about one of Lenox Martin's sons, Thomas R. C. Martin. Thomas R. C. is living on lower Town Creek between 1836 and 1851, according to the Methodist Church and County Commissioner records. He married Harriet A. Coater 6/24/1844. The deed information indicates he died between 1851 and 1855. Judging from the deeds, he may not have had a will. But there was a trustee appointed for settling the disputes about his estate. Aside from going to Cumberland, is there any way to find out more of what may be in the Court records? Does anyone know more about this family? The below obit for Walter L. Bittinger states that his parents were Joseph and Eliza (Broadwater) Bittinger. Could he be a sister to Anna? His wife Cora Meyers is in my line, so I don't have any additional research going backwards. I have Walter and Cora in the 1920 and 1930 census with their children in Garrett County. I just tried to quickly find Walter with his parents in the 1900 and 1910 census to no avail. I will try to look more later. I descend from Robert Green from the late 1700's and although I have many of the above surnames strewn throughout my database I can't place any of the other names listed. Most of my research in Allegany and Garrett county is pre 1880 though. Hope this helps. Ruth Ann O'Hara OBIT: Walter L.
