    3. Found this at ancestry. Leatha Ann (spelled) Selicks married a Columbus Barger in 1864. So now I am going to see if I can find a Letha Barger marrying William Nuse and trying to get a copy of the marriage license. I really would like to find her mother. Even she lists her mother as XXXXX Selicks it would give us a start to find her maiden name.

    1. Re: [MDALLEGA] Marriage Licenses
    2. Maryland required marriage licenses be obtained from the clerk of the county court beginning in 1777. However, banns published three Sundays in the county newspaper where the bride resided could be substituted for a license. Quakers could marry without a license. The archives does have the county record books, but only on microfilm. And of course if they used banns instead of a license there will be no record. The records may also have been affected by the courthouse fire in 1893. I'll note the information down for the next time I'm at the archives in Annapolis, but it may be a few months before I get back there. Although we're only one county south the kids always have sports and scouts going on weekends this time of year. Did they record marriages license back then. I think the person got married in Allegany or Frederick County. 3. Mary Ellen - I checked my tree and I see that I made an error in my early research ( I was just learning!) - I did NOT make note who married them, or where, other than in Lonaconing!! I will have to go thru my files and locate my original notes and see what I have. Will do that over the weekend and get back to you. "Something" is telling me that it was at the M.E. Church or by an M.E. minister, but I am not sure of that right now. I will check my notes and get back to you. 3. Marge, I haven't followed this conversation word for word but have you checked the online marriages of Allegany County, MD http://usgwarchives.net/md/allegany/othrmarr.html There is a list at this site starting with 1791. I found marriage date at the Cumberland court house for my ancestor who married in the early 1800's. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Marge Sent: Thursday, April 23, 2009 6:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MDALLEGA] Fw: Marriage Licenses Yes it would be worth a shot. Now another question, how would I get the courthouse to search for a marriage which I don't know the date of and only know the first name of the bride. I know she married a William Nuse who was born in 1841. I do know from a search in Ancestry that he married a Bridget Corey (from Ireland) on 4 February 1864. But they had no record of his marriage to Leatha what ever her surname was at the time.

I think this is pretty standard -- Westmoreland county says they didn't start keeping records until such and such a year, but in their database they have quite a few before then -- so it's always worth checking. 3. Thanks..that lets out a check on marriages because I am sure that their first child was born before 1898. I am trying to find this woman who is a great great aunt. She was born to my great great grandparent before he married my grandmother. He had three children by an earlier marriage??? Altho the two boys ended up living with the family I did not find the girl Leatha (married name) Nuse for sure til earlier this week when I received the death certificate. Guess I'll keep on looking..thanks a lot for trying to help.

However, I did find announcement of the granting of the license in a MD paper -- via Godfrey's service. I could search that for you if you like. 3. The problem is, I don't know her maiden name. But she was married previously. Her death certificate lists her father, but puts her mother as unknown because it asks for the maiden name. And the certificate says the death was reported by the supertendent of Montevue Hospital. And he probably wouldn't have know her mother's maiden name. She married a William Nuse born April 1841 (which was the second marriage) that's the one I am hoping to find so it might give her mothers first name. That would give me a start. She is Leathe (sometimes Leatha) H. Nuse born November 1846. Her first son was born April 1890. Makes it hard to find her before that. The death certificate says she was born in Maryland, but she was born in Virginia as were her parents as she reported on the census. I am postive about this because the father Owen T. Sealock was born and lived in Virginia. And I don't think the supertendent would not have know for sure that she was born in Virginia. Any assistance would be appreciated. It is a long trek from Minnesota to Maryland.
