I have seen information on researching military records from WW1 on the internet. Can anyone give me the information to check the records? Thank you, Lois Zelina

Phyllis, I have Davids email at home but not there at the moment. I'm sure someone will send it to you before I get home. I'm in CA going to Tahoe today for a day trip. I got the Harden yDNA sample yesterday and it is ready to mail off. Hoping to prove which line I am in. There are over 104 Harden, Hardin and Hardings that have taken this test. It is quite interesting that this can be accomplished. Hope to have some results in a few weeks. I found this definition on the web Marriage banns, also called the banns of marriage, serve as a formal announcement of intent to marry. By tradition, marriage banns are called in many Christian churches, including those administered by the Church of England and Catholic churches. Depending on the nation, banns of marriage can be used instead of a wedding license, a loophole exploited by some same sex couples, and many churches require that the banns be read before they will hold a wedding. Marriage banns are rooted in centuries of Christian tradition, and for many devout couples, they are an important part of the wedding process. In order to be considered valid, marriage banns must be read or called during services on three Sundays before the wedding in the parish church of the bride and the groom. If the wedding is being held outside the parish of the bride or groom, the marriage banns must be read in that church as well. The banns are considered valid for three months after the last reading. Typically, the marriage banns state the name and parish of both bride and groom, and indicate that individuals with objections to the marriage should make those objections known before the wedding day. The religious official calling the marriage banns will also indicate how many times the banns have been read. In the early church, marriage between members of the church had to be approved both by the parents of the prospective couple and the church itself. The banns indicated formal church approval of the marriage. The marriage banns were also used to root out illegal marriages, such as those held between people who were too closely related or already married. The practice of reading the marriage banns in all parishes concerned ensures that anyone who objects to the marriage will have ample opportunity to do so before the actual day of the wedding. Source - What Are Marriage Banns? Dick Crow "The Ole Crow" Retired and enjoying it! Ruth, Thanks for all you've done to help me. I wish I could help you do your data entry but I haven't done mine either - in about 15 months! Uh oh. Thanks for setting a good example. Maybe when it gets hot I can get back to it (it was maybe when it gets cold before). It is very hard not to wander all over the place but sometimes you just have to get down to it. Good luck! BINGO! - Found him - date of obituary was 05.31.1951. I am sending it off list!

I am not familiar with the Banns book. Is it available in a library in Allegany County? You also educated me, as I was not familiar with Banns. I looked it up to find out what they were. Do you know if the date 21 August 1886 is the date of the bann or the marraige? I would assume the occupation is Glass Presser. As previously posted, Henry was living with Albert GROVES, my grandfather. My grandfather was a blower of artisan glass. My mother told me that Albert blew some of the most beautiful pieces of glass you would want to see. Albert later became partner in the Wonder Bar on Virginia Avenue in Cumberland. Henry's parents Lewis and Mary TOPP both attended St. Patricks and are buried in St. Patricks cemetery in Cumberland. I am still seeking the Obituary for Henry TOPP - reportedly 29 May 1941 in Cumberland, MD> Matt _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail® goes with you. http://windowslive.com/Tutorial/Hotmail/Mobile?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_HM_Tutorial_Mobile1_052009

Good morning all - This is so very hard to do, but I must. I will not be available to assist with newspaper articles and/or searches until AFTER August. I have a terrible habit of helping others search for their families, and neglecting my own data entry. With all that I have to do over the next few months to get my own data prepared for 2 reunions, I must knuckle down and get busy. So, please save your questions and problems for me until after August and I will try to get back to all of you after summer is over. (it is so much more fun to search for articles than it is to do data entry into the family tree. ugh) I also will not be sending any obits/articles to the volunteers, unless I locate some while doing an occasional search for my own research. BUT if anyone on the list has obits they would like to contribute, contact me at ruthsprowlsATwindstreamDOTnet and we can arrange for emailing or snail mail. I will be sure to pass them on to the volunteers, or put you in contact with a volunteer. Thank you all for your understanding and support. (I would still like to continue touching base with you all , just to keep in touch!!) Ruth Sprowls
I would suggest you also post/search to Garrett county. I searched the newspaperarchive online and can get nothing for Dewitt or Casteel for your posted names. Ruth
You're the greatest, Ruth. Thanks for your past help! I've been neglecting my own data entry too. It's so much fun to help others. It's time for me to do the same as you... data entry... ugh. Hoye has listed John DeWitt (s/o Peter & Rebecca) as being married 1st to Sarah Hartman and then 2nd to Louisa CASTEEL (d/o Shardrack CASTEEL Jr.). John and his two wives are buried in Hoyes Cemetery, Garrett, MD. Who is the father of Shadrack Jr. if there is a Sr.? Shadrach & Laurena had no daughter named Louisa to my knowledge. Shadrack & Elizabeth had no daughter named Louisa to my knowledge. Did Hoye make an error (he has before)? or did he mean something else... Does anyone know the answer? Priscilla
