    1. [MDALLEGA] who is George Anderson
    2. doris smith
    3. My great grandparents lived in Cumberland from 1871 until the early 1900s. They named all of their children after family friends. I've accounted for most of them, but not for George Anderson Dorris. Does anyone know of a George Anderson who might have lived in Cumberland during those years? Thank you, Doris Smith Chapel Hill NC

    1. [MDALLEGA] Crowe Clarification Needed
    2. Dick Crow
    3. I am wondering if someone in the Cumberland area could assist me with a problem that I have discovered. Several years back I copied the Crow/e marriage records up to June of 1922. I noticed reading the obit for Jacob Cephas Crowe that Genie Ragan has posted on Our Brick Walls does not seem to match the marriage records. As noted below James Cephas was married to Eveline Stevey, but in Jacob Cephas's obit it states he married Eveline. The 1881 marriage notes Cephas Crow married Merrietta Wilson - Jacob Cephas obit indicates his first wife was Etta Wilson which I presume matches. 1881 9/15 Cephas Crow Allegany County Merrietta Wilson Allegany County Allegany County Rev. J.R. Anderson 1900 4/13 James Cephas Crowe Midlothian, MD Eveline Stevey Midlothian, MD Midlothian, MD Rev. C. W. Cannon Here is in part Jacob's Obit. Jacob C. Crowe, 81, died Monday night at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Elsie Hume, Pittsburgh. Mr. Crowe, who until recently was a resident of Frostburg and Borden Shaft, was born in Garrett county March 15, 1859. He was the husband of the late Sarah Etta Wilson and Evelyn Stevey Crowe, both preceding him in death. If possible could someone if they have the time check the marriage books at the Courthouse to verify that I copied the information correctly for these two marriage dates and names. Thank you in advance, Dick Crow "The Ole Crow" Retired and enjoying it! "Fair Winds and Following Seas."

    3. Lois, If you could give me a little more info on this Rowan family I might be able to help you. If you like you can send a report to my direct e mail: [email protected] I will check the St. Mary's records for you and I do have some Rowan's in my line. And, on the next posting, regarding CARSON, if your peeps were Catholic they would have gone to St. Mary of the Annunciation in Lonaconing or St. Gabriel's in Barton. I have some records for both of these churches if I can help you, let me know. Off the top of my head, I don't recall the CARSON name from those records. I also have some Methodist records for Barton Methodist Church, but they have not been transcribed yet, so are not searchable. With regard to the birth records, civil records were not officially kept until 1898 and they can be found at Maryland Archive in Annapolis. Your best bet would probably we be church records to find those early births.

    1. [MDALLEGA] Mullen family
    2. Lois Zelina
    3. Is there anyone on this list researching the Mullen family? (Mullan/Mullin/ ) There seems to be a familial relationship to John and Bridget Rowan since John and Mary Mullen were sponsors at my grandmother, Bridget Rowan's baptism. Bridget's sister Mary Ellen had Edward and Mary Mullen as sponsors and Nicholas Mullen was a sponsor for Catherine Rowan, another of Bridget's siblings. Possible connective names are Rowan, McMahon. The Rowan family lived in the Bloomington, Oakland , Westernport area of Maryland. Any info about the Mullen families connection to the Rowan's will make my day. Thanks, Lois Zelina

    1. [MDALLEGA] Huff Cemetery
    2. Richard Day
    3. This week I had the opportunity to visit Allegany County, specifically to see the land owned by my 4-great grandfather, Thomas Perrin, and subsequently by son James K. Perrin. This spread is located on Lower Town Creek Road immediately south of Bear Hill Road, including the northern third of Crabtree Folly (200 acres in the valley proper), plus about 60 acres on the hill west of the valley (Wheat Hill and Buck's Lodge). The current owners of the land, the Miller's, directed my wife and I to Agnes Slider, whose family had previously owned the land starting in 1906. She confirmed the Perrin connection according to the 1906 deed (which she had in her possession), and also told us of a cemetery on the hill. Called the Huff cemetery, it contained about twenty plain fieldstones, plus two stones of more modern vintage with the name Slider clearly inscribed. Looking through the deed records, it is apparent that this land was sold by James K. to Amos McElfish in 1851, who sold it to Jasper Huff in 1853. Jasper and his son William F. Huff lived there until at least the 1900 census. I am curious whether anyone on this list is familiar with the Huff family, and/or knows about this cemetery. I don't believe it is listed in the Rural Cemeteries of Allegany County book. I want to believe that it predates the Huff times, and may include graves from the Perrin family. Any information about the Huff's would be appreciated. Richard Perrin Day

    3. Here is a link to a searchable ships list website. As in the subject line, it includes ships that arrived in Canada and NY between 1865 and 1922. You cannot search by surname. You can search by year or by the ships name, fortunate if you know the arrival year. The scanned pages are not full page, but most are still readable. For those who are used to reading transcribed lists of names, sorry, but you need to read thru each scanned page of the manifests, and spend a LOT of time. Hope this helps in someones research. 3. I don't know what is listed there, but www.cyndislist.com has a lot of that time of information that you can link to. There might be WWI info as she has a section on Military Records. I always forget to check her out, I have made some good discoveries there. Also NARA has WWI records. But it is very expensive now to order copies. You might get an index tho and see if anything is there. And I belong to Ancestry. If you give me the info I will see if I can find who you are looking for.
