    1. [MD-VETERANS] George & Adam GRAVES United Empire Loyalists emigrated from Maryland to Canada 1775 to 1790's
    2. Jill L
    3. Hello. I'm new to these lists and I hope that I have the right ones; there are a lot of choices for the state of Maryland. I am looking for resources available for my ancestors who may have lived in Maryland during the revolutionary war. I had hit a dead end with my 4x great grandfather George GRAVES (b. abt 1800 in USA died before 1851 in Ontario, Canada) but recently through another rootsweb mailing list have found that there is a GRAVES family association and it has George's ancestry back 2 generations. I would like to verify the information as none of it is sourced AND there are no dates so all I've got to go on now is names. According to the book American Migrations 1765-1799, Lt. George GRAVES & Capt. Adam GRAVES were brothers who were alive in the 1780's living in Frederick County, Maryland. They were loyal to the British and were trying recruit men to their cause when they were captured, condemned to die but instead they were reprieved on condition of being transported to France. They escaped to New York, then sailed to England on 10 Sep 1783. If these are my ancestors, they eventually received land in 1797 in Pittsburgh Township, Frontenac County, Upper Canada just north of the St. Lawrence River, east of present day Kingston, Ontario. Again from the book American Migrations, George & Adam GRAVES made a claim for 428 acres of land in Frederick, Washington Co in 1783. The last bit of information from the book is that George GRAVES died in Canada in 1789 (if he died in 1789 how was it that he received land in 1797? did he have a son also named George who got his land?) Does anyone know if Frederick, Washington County has good land records that far back? If yes, any suggestions where I could start to find the land claim records by Adam & George GRAVES? Does anyone know if there are British Revolutionary war military records in Maryland? Apparently Adam GRAVES brother, Joseph GRAVES was an Admiral for the British and his sister (no name) owned a plantation worked by slaves. Was Maryland a state that had plantations? I would have thought that plantations would have been farther south than Maryland but I don't know much about early American history or the eastern states geography. It looks like there is a lot of information for the Maryland area on the LDS familysearch catalog so I will also start with those films but if anyone on the list has some helpful hints, I would be grateful for the information since I haven't done any genealogy searching outside of Ontario, Canada! ~ Jill ~ Searching for Family Names in Pittsburgh Township, Frontenac County Dunlop, Graves, McFadden, McLean, Milton, Percy, VanHorn, Wilmot See what I’ve discovered at www.iliketwo.blogspot.com

    1. [MD-VETERANS] Military research at the National Archives
    2. Kelley Bevis
    3. Hello. My name is Kelley -- I recently completed my Masters degree and am going to law school this fall here in Washington, D.C. School is expensive and I could use some extra money to pay for tuition and loans, so I am offering to do military research at the National Archives (service files, pension files, etc). Generally, a request for this kind of information takes the Archives several months, at a minimum, to process. I can retrieve them much faster and also give you someone to interact with instead of a government form. My fees are reasonable, intended to compensate me for my time, printing costs and postage for what I'll send back to you. The Archives offers extended hours once a month, so I would be doing research over the course of three days each month, and I am more than happy to send you a schedule. If you are interested, please just email me at texlabooks@gmail.com Take care. Kelley

    1. [MD-VETERANS] EMEL - Rev War Soldier of German descent
    2. Nancy and Dave Lindroth
    3. During the Revolution there was a group of soldiers who fought with the Maryland line. They were known as the German Battalion. I believe many were from Frederick MD area. I have a pamphlet produced by The Society of the Cincinnati, by John Dwight Kilbourne [The Society has a Library in Washington DC] "A Short History of the Maryland Line in the Continental Army" , Baltimore, MD 1992 This 78-page pamphlet is not indexed and does not list soldiers but is a History of the Maryland Line. - Northern and Southern Campaigns.See paragraph below. Page v: "PREFACE "This history primarily concerns the seven regiments formed in Maryland for Continental service in December 1776. But there is more to it than appears in these pages. An eighth regiment, sometimes called the "German Battalion," was credited to the Maryland Line. It was authorized 25 May 1776, assigned 27 June 1776 to the Middle Department, and organized 6 July-25 September 1776 at Philadelphia, to consist of five companies from eastern Pennsylvania, two companies from Baltimore County and two companies from Frederick County, Maryland. It was assigned to the Main Army 23 September 1776 and as a part of the 1st Pennsylvania Regiment fought at Trenton, Princeton, Brandywine and Germantown. The regiment was reassigned to Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey Brigade. Its most notable service was with the Sullivan Expedition of 1779; by the Spring of 1780 it was stationed on the frontiers of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. On 1 January 1781 the Regiment was disbanded at Morristown, NJ, and Baltimore. This regiment did not accompany the other elements of the Maryland Line to the Southern Department..............." Places to look: BOOKS Henry Peden, Baltimore, Maryland author and compiler - He also does research for a fee. There are a couple of other compilers of MD Rev War Soldiers. CDs There is a Family Tree Maker CD #521 which lists Maryland Soldiers - I haven't looked at it in quite a while so I don't remember if German Battalion was highlighted. LIBRARIES:- MD Frederick MD Historical Society Library - Frederick Maryland Maryland Historical Society - Baltimore - Check their online Index. Maryland Historical Society, Annapolis - online Indexes - there are several Society of the Cincinnati of Maryland, Washington DC LIBRARIES:- PENNA: I have limited experience with PA depositories Pennsylvania Archives - not sure if their published series is online. It is quite extensive. Check Washington County Historical Society Library, Washingtron County PA or PA Historical Society Library in Philadelphia which is located not far from NARA Branch office. LIBRARIES:- Washington DC DAR - Washington DC for other German Battalion members.- See if they have someone who has a lot of experience checking the German Battalion. The Index of Rev War Pension Applications, NGS 1976 lists Leonard IMMEL, PA Pension #S22826. Reviewing this pension file may lead you to additional information. You can order the DAR records online for a fee. The Pension may be on film at NARA. Ancestry now has the Pensions online. I have not worked with this collection. Some may be available on Heritage Quest also. I had a hard time tracking this group with NARA films at DC depository - mostly you need someone who has been at the National Archives a long time to find the correct film. I was searching for KERNS, KEARNS, and several other spellings of the same. So if you run across any, let me know. Good luck with your search. 3. I am researching on behalf of my husband's mother. She would really truly like to be a member of the DAR. She is a descendant of the Jacob Imel. Following is some information. Please let me know if you would need more information. I apologize in advance if this is too much info. I provided a lot of information because I have read on some places online that these Hessian brothers never existed. It has been my mother-in-law's dream for many years to become a member of the DAR. She started her research in the 60s, then had to stop to raise her children. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Among the Hessian mercenary soldiers sent by the English to America to fight the Colonists during the Revolutionary War, were several brothers, probably five, who had the name IMEL. Shortly after coming to America in 1776 the brothers went AWOL from the English army and joined the Continental Forces fighting the English. After the Rev War, the brothers settled in America, at first in the general area of Frederick, Maryland. Through subsequent generations the spelling of IMEL was changed to IMEL, EMAL, EMEL, EMMEL, or EMMELL. My mother-in-law's ancestor, as we understand it, is JACOB IMEL, the third of the Hessian brothers. (See below for info on the others.) JACOB IMEL Born in 1760, Greeg Township. Died between 1830 and 1840. Though it is generally believed that all of the Imel brothers first settled in Maryland, all early records found for Jacob Imel are in Centre County, PA. Jacob Imel married a Catherin (maiden name not known. The 1820 census for Centre Cty, PA, lists Jacob Imel, his wife Catherine and five children. 1830 census still shows the Jacob Imel family in Centre County, PA. 1840 census shows no Jacob Imel. Presumably, Jacob died in Centre County, PA. 1860 census reports from Ohio list Catherine Imel as living with her son Andrew, in Miami Cty, Ohio. Jacob and Catherine had 5 children (Catherine Imel, Jacob Imel, David Imel, George Imel, Andrew Imel). ANDREW IMEL born in PA 22 Nov 1803. Married about 1826 in Centre Cty, PA to Catherine Schounk, who was born 6 APR 1811, in Centre County, PA. The first 9 children were born in Centre County, PA, all prior to 1848. The family home was destroyed by fire in 1848, along with the family papers and records. 4 children were born after 1848 in Mifflin Cty, PA, the youngest being born in 1855. 1860 census shows Andrew living with his mother Catherine and 5 of his children (no mention of his wife Catherine).Between 1855 and 1860, Andrew and his family moved from PAto Ohio. Catherine died during this time. Place of burial unknown. Andrew died in Miami Cty, Ohio sometime after 1860. Andrew and Catherine had 13 children (Lydia Imel, Solomon Emal, David Emel, George Washington Emmel, William Albright Emal, Daniel Emel, Anna Mary Emal, Elizabeth J Emal, Andrew C Emmel, Samuel F Emmel, Nancy Catherine Emmell, Franklin Pierce Emmel, Sarah Margaret Imel. The name Emal has only been found in this family and its descendants. WILLIAM ALBRIGHT EMAL born 27 Dec 1836 in Centre Cty, PA. He served in Copany C, 8th Regiment, IL Cavalry, during the Civil War. He was a charter member of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) chapter. After the Civil War, he returned to Carroll County, IL where he was a blacksmith a Polo, IL for a year or more. He married Sarah Ann Hopwood at Polo, IL on July 13, 1865. Their first child was born at Polo. Second child was born at Milledgeville, IL. The family moved to Iowa Cty, IA in 1869, where they farmed near Deep River, IA. All of the 7 younger children were born here. Family moved to NE, 8 miles SE of Norman, in Kearney Cty, NE, in 1892. The oldest of William Emal and Sarah Hopwood's 9 children was Clayton Fillmore Emal. CLAYTON FILLMORE EMAL born 1 JAN 1867 at Polo, IL, Moved with his parents to Deep River, IA Cty, IA in 1869. When his parents moved to NE in 1892, Clayton remained at Deep River, IA and lived his entire life there. He married Rosina Chrisine Goebel in 1887. She was born in Youngtown, Ohio, on 31, 1866. Clayton died 16 Nov 1940. Rosina died 17 Nov 1942. They are both buried at Deep River, IA. They had 6 children. The youngest child was Clyde Goebel Emal. CLYDE GOEBEL EMAL born 10 MAY 1906. Married first to Mabelle Wilhite from whom he was later divorced. They had one child Deloris Emal. Clyde and his 2nd wife had 2 children. DELORIS EMAL is my mother-in-law. ***************************************************** The other brothers: HENRY IMEL 1756 died 1848 married Magaret Disher in Maryland. Later family moved to Bedford Cty, PA. Later moved to Fayette County, Salt Lick Townships, PA, which apparently is where Henry died. All descendants of Henry retained the name IMEL. THOMAS IMEL 1757-1758 No records on this brother, to my knowledge. JOSEPH IMEL 1762-around 1839. First married in Maryland in 1791, wife's name not known. This wife died in 1798-1799. They had 4 children. Joselph remarried after 1805 to a Mary (last name not known). They moved to Fayette County, German Township, PA, where they settled near Joseph's older brother Henry. Both Joseph and Mary died there. PETER EMEL Born 30 Mar 1764 in Hesse-Cassel, Germany. Died 3 Jan 1849 in Wayne County, Indiana.. Records for Peter are more extensive than for the other brothers. After going AWOL, Peter joined General Morgan's Virginian Riflemen, as a drummer boy. Possibly served with this unituntil it was mustered out in 1782. Peter married Susanna Pul in the Evangelical Lutheran Church Frederick, Maryland on 12 Aug 1787. The lived on the plantation that Susanna (a widow) owned in Virginia. . All children were born at Greenbrier, Shenandoah County, VA. Oldest child, Maria, was baptized in the church in Frederick, Maryland. Their third child, Henry, was married in Greenbrier, VA. ----- Original Message ----- From: Scott Wolfe<mailto:scott1@digginbones.com> To: MD-VETERANS@rootsweb.com<mailto:MD-VETERANS@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, November 12, 2007 5:34 PM Subject: [MD-VETERANS] REV WAR PENSION FILE LOOK UPS Hi all. 1. Requesting information on WWI veteran
    2. Dennis Gnatowski
    3. I'm trying to gather information on a relative. What I have thus far is: Julius Gnatowski Lived at 2116 Fleet Street, Baltimore, MD when inducted into the Army (NG) at the age of 21. Service information: NG band corp; mus 3c 1/18/18; mus 2c 3/12/19, Hq Co 4 Md. Inf; Hq 54 Dep Brig 10/5/17; Hq Co 112 MG Bn 11/8/17; Hq Co 154 Dep Brig 1/28/18, Hon disch 5/24/19 1920 Census information has him living at 2427 Fleet Street. He's buried in the Long Island National Cemetery (16 July 1967). I'm looking for more detail on his Army service. What instrument did he play? Where did he serve? Apparently he didn't go overseas. Other information, like did he get married and have children, when did he move away from Maryland, etc. would be helpful as well. ----------------------------------------------------------- Dennis Gnatowski dgnatowski@yahoo.com ----------------------------------------------------------- __________________________________ Yahoo! 1. From List Mom - A few items to think about.
    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other genealogical mailing list available, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any Rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message as quickly as possible. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding to the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. Kathleen Burnett List Mom KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net

    3. Thanks for being so prompt. I just could not get any thing to open! I sometimes think it is because all of the computer lines are busy if something big is happening in D.C. I know that sounds crazy, but it is rather like hearing that all the circuits are busy. Anyway, appreciate your help. 3. Caroline: It's sure working fine now -- sometimes Rootsweb (our hotst) slows down or is unavailable for a time then we've got dead links. I just checked and everything seems okay. The only thing that was moved was the main MD page, all the counties have already been in the sub-directory for well, years. We've just as a whole project moved our main page into our own sub-directory so there should be no issues with the county pages or individual transcriptions. What specifically did you have trouble with? It could be an outside link that is dead too.
