    3. Bill, I am guessing you mean moving household goods and family. You would take a boat west up the Potomac from Williamsport to Cumberland. There was a road that was later the Old Pike (and later US40)that ran some what parallel to the river. The boat would have been the safest. They would get off at the Fort in Cumberland where the boats turned around and take the road south. The boats hauled people and food west the furs, lumber and coal east. Most people went west through the Narrow's to Ohio. The old trail south would today be RT51. I lived in Cumberland 1967-1972 and walked the old trails. tom -----Original Message----- From: Bill [mailto:bill-good1@attbi.com] Sent: Friday, September 20, 2002 4:03 PM To: MD-FRED-GEN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MDFred] MD to VA Migration Route Hello, What would have been the most probable migratory route ca 1770 from Hagerstown and Frederick, MD area to the Patterson Creek Valley of Hampshire Co., Virginia (S of Cumberland, MD to Headsville/Burlington area of present Mineral Co., WV) Thanks for your help.
