I'm out of state but someone on the list could look up the land tract "Whiskie" in Tracy's "Pioneers of the Monocacy" to see exactly where your Gerard Lived. Meridith had lands on the Potomac at the Mouth of the Monocacy. Meridith was a Quaker and there are articles in "Western Maryland Genealogy" about the Davis family in Frederick Co. I seem to remember there were a couple different Davis' that migrated to Frederick especially the ones in the North of the County. My Marshall's were nearby on Carrolton Manor near Noland's Ferry by 1742. William's (d 1778) son Alexander moved to Mason County Ky abt 1795/6 where he shows up in the Census and court records. Mine were not Quakers. An email from David Fletcher just popped in that mentions Giddins Ford. Don't know that location someone could look that up too in "Pioneers". Would be interested in why your family choose the 1796 time period and Mason County. Most land warrants for Rev War lands were closer to Lexington. I was in Frederick County, MD several times although I did not stop to do any research. Previously, I had been on this list looking for a Garrard Davis or Garad Davis who lived in Frederick County prior to 1796. I have now found more information on him: Inhabitants of Frederick County, MD, Volume 2, 1749-1800 by Stefanie R. Shaffer (975.287 N2SHA) shows a Grarad Davis, 1745, Whiskie, 282 ac., Pt#1 195, Now Frederick. What is meant by the word "Whiskie?" Is it a particular area of Frederick County? He was on a grand jury in Frederick Nov 1750. Also the following were grand jurors in March 1750: William Davis son of Garad and Benjamin Davis, whom I believe to be related. In Volume 1 of the above book, a Garrard Davis shows up twice: March 9, 1780 and 14 Oct 1767. In the following book: "This Was the Life excerpts from the Judgment Record of Frederick Co., MD 1748-1765" (975.287 P2, RIC by Millard Milhouse Rice there is a mention of my Garad Davis as follows: "Jury inquest on the body of a drownded Negro belonging to Garad Davis 28 Jan 1763." While at the State Library in Harrisburg, PA, I found the following: Maryland Early American Series by Ronald Vern Jackson: Garad Davis, Frederick Co., All Saints Parish 1756 and 1760. Where was All Saints Parish located? In the McLean (VA) FHC, I found a mention of a will of this Garad Davis dated 1764 in Frederick County. Apparently, his son, Garrard, came to Mason County, KY about 1796 and died there in either 1802 or 1804;. My 4th great-grandfather was Benjamin Davis born May 1776 who was the son of the Garrard who died in Kentucky. Garrard's will so mentions him along with his brothers and sisters. One of Benjamin's brothers was a Garrard Davis who married Elizabeth McDermott or McDermod probably dau of Francis McDermod in Frederick County, 1795. The McDermodds also moved to Mason County about the same time. Benjamin married Estella (Stella) Phillips dau of George and Mary (Bell) Phillips in Mason County, KY 1802/1804. They later came to Camden Township, Schuyler County, IL in 1832. I'm interested in any other records of this Garrard Davis in Frederick County or anyone doing research on this family. Thanks, Annie PS: Back in August, I mentioned that a Mathias Davis lived in the Monacacy Area of Frederick. His name was actually Meredith Davis and he was a Quaker. He shows up in the two volume series on the Monacacy area of Frederick. ==== MD-FRED-GEN Mailing List ==== No FLAMING Allowed here! Annie, It's possible that the Meredith Family will enter into your research. I found the following in the book, "Genealogies of Pennsylvania Families, Volume II", which is extracted from the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. "Meredith David, born 6th of 3rd month (May) 1675 according to family record, son of the emigrant David Meredith then of Radnorshire, Wales, died testate in Plymouth Township, Philadelphia County, Penna., between 4th of 12th month (Feb.) 1726/7 and 10 May 1927, the dates of his Will and its probate. Meredith David (as he was named in the Welsh System of Patronymics instead of fixed surnames), of Radnor in the Welsh Tract, Chester County, Penna.,..." I know this is not the person you are searching for, but it is an example of Quaker name conventions. Also, the Quaker calendar is different than the one we know. I am researching the Meredith Family in Frederick County, Maryland. In particular, I am trying to find information on the parents of Simon Meredith who purchased land in Frederick County in 1766. The deed shows Simon Meredith as being from Chester County, Pennsylvania. Good Luck with your search.
