I need to find more information on the following family: Lewis Smith abt. 1844, death unknown, burial unknown married 1/2/1867 at her parents home in Wolfsville (her father is John Baker,Blacksmith) Rose Ann Baker b. 4/2/1849, died 8-6-1929 buried Mt. Bethel, Garfield, Fred.Co., MD Lewis and "Roseann) are found in the 1870 census in the Hauver District of Frederick Co., MD with their first child, William D. Smith b. 1869 Their second child, John Henry Clayton Smith was born10/15/1863, died 12/19/1915 Their third child, Harry Edward Smith was born June 1874, died 5/26/1910 in Smoketown, Washington Co,MD. The Middletown Valley Register reported on 2/27/1874: .....in Catoctin District ..where all parties resided....Thomas Shelton eloped with the wife and two children of Lewis Smith, taking with them all the bed clothing belonging to Mr. Smith, who at the time was in Washington County at work. Shelton was also a married man, and left behind him a wife and one child....Mr. Smith was greatly astonished when he returned home on Saturday night last, to find his wife and children gone, and his house emptied of much of its most valuable contents......... I have checked the 1880 census for any of these people, and only found one of the children, William staying with his grandfather, John Baker in Wolfsville, MD. I cannot find Thomas Shelton, his wife Mary, son James OR more importantly Rose Ann Smith, Lewis Smith or their second and third child. Rose Ann would have been pregnant with Harry Edward at the time of this article. In 1895, Harry Edward Smith stated on his marriage license he was living at Crystal Falls which I assume to be Pondsville in Washington CO, MD. I have his complete family line down to me. In 1899 Rose Ann Baker Smith married guess who? Thomas Shelton. Both said they were widowed and lived near Pondsville. So did Rose Ann go back to Lewis or live with Tom Shelton? Where was she for 25 years?Rose Ann and Thomas Shelton are buried together at Mt. Bethel U.M. Cemetery near Garfield in Frederick County, MD. I have not been able to locate an obituary for Lewis Smith nor a grave in either Washington or Frederick County. Any help with this mystery is much appreciated!! CIndy Hoffman
