Hi Helen, I'm not sure of the origin of the name Wilcoxon but I've looked everywhere else for information on it. Can you please see if you have anything. Thank You. I have had similar experiences. The German names drive me up a wall. I have Greib which evolved over about 50 years to Gripe then to Cripe and Reubsamin (several spellings) which was translated and then used as Turnipseed - and others. The spellings get so far out one does not know if it is the person we want or someone else entirely. Without some clues of these changes, one can lose the trail completely. Jeanne, I have been trying to find roots for my 3rd grt. grandfather for years. This grandfather was one Peyton Powell bo 1787-88 who married Permelia Wilkinson bo 1795. They married 1811 Frederick Co MD. They were in Loudoun Va on the 1820-30-and 40 ceand in Fayquier VA 1850. Both are buried in North Fork Cem. Loudoun VA. Permelia's family were Quakers from Chester PA. to MD, to VA. I'm looking for a Powell family very possibly in or near Frederick, MD. Thank you so very much for your more than kind offer. Barbara M.
Helen, Sorry I forgot to state that all early Hitaffers resided in and around Frederick , MD , also Loudoun , Fairfax and Fauquier VA. Many still do. Thanks again. Have a cool day. I'm in Missouri and we have had some hot days. Barbara M.
Helen, I have information that my 4th or 5th grt. grandfather ( surname HITAFFER OR ANY VARIATION) was a Hessian soldier, who left ranks and joined the Americans. It is said he was given a piece of land upon which he built a log cabin either in VA or MD. I have been searching for aprox. 15 years for this man with the very unusual name. So far all Hitaffers in this country are related to me. The Hitaffer whom I beleive to be my 4th grt. shows on the 1800-1810 Loudoun VA ce as a Jon Hitopher sp Marie. To date I beleive this should be a John and the earliest Hitaffer or such anyone has found. This Jon was bo by 1765. I'm sure this name has been angilized to some degree. How or how much is the big ? CAN YOU HELP OR ADVISE ME? Thank you so very much. Barbara M.
It is found both ways.. but.. the surname was Shehan by 1800... or some spelling of such.. a court record in 1808 states.. "Boston Shehan formerly Boston Schuechen"...etc... that plus the 1880 census makes for just about 100% certain. Hi, the name as given by the family in an extensive family tree put together in the late 1800s was Schuechen However.. the clerks in KY soon change this to all types of spelling.. even his lst name got mangled... Boston instead of Sebastion. etc. Have to chuckle as my father was always talking about his "Irish Grandmother" Kate Shehan. Ha!! the 1880 census proves Sebastion was b in Germany. Sebastion had a dau still living in 1880 at age 80 and she gives her father born in Germany and mother in MD.. True. There area other tid bits of proof etc. Mary Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ruth L. Jeanne, I would love to find any HARTSOCK/HERZOG marriages, wills, births & deaths. I this seems a lot, but I am trying to find my 3 GGrandfather's family & I believe they may have been from Frederick County before moving to Allegany. William Hartsock was born in 1811, but he died in Allegany County. I need to know who his parents were. He may have had a brother, George. I'm not sure. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks! How about Bauman or Bowman, any and all first names. I would like to know if the Hessian story I have heard, which is the same as many I have read about three brothers coming as Hessians, deserting, etc. cbj
Mary Ann- Was the name Schuechen that of a female ancestor? The reason I ask is that -en or -in was added to the women's surname, a German form of gender identification. The Journal registry (in 1991 issue) of Hessian soldiers' names include Schuchard, Schuebel, Schuetze which are similar. The spelling of the German names varied so much I have at times given up (temporarily!) in disgust. Just a thought. I have noted their marriage in the Frederick Co. Marriage licenses book as taking place in 1791. I am looking for the parents of that couple. I am sure both were residents of Frederick County but can find no trace of their parents. Any help would be appreciated. Leona Crum Scott, Oakdale, Pa.

Hello, Wow! What a kind offer. I am looking for Priscilla Bennetts Mother and Father. She married Caleb Keith in 1869. She was located in Frederick County, 1850 Census, at the Catholic Home for Visitation, a Catholic Catholic School to this day. Since Bennette is common I do not want for you to knock your self out. Thanks, Helen
