    3. Jeanne when and if you have time I am looking for the surname of Butcher. John and Sophia M. Butcher had a son, Thomas Henry Butcher, christained in 1837 at St Peters Episcopal church in Poolesville, Montgomery Co, Md But it shows that their home was in Frederick, Fredrick Co, Md. I understand that this wasn't that unusual for this time period. When Thomas was about 11 he was living with a Jacob Majors -older gentleman and wife in Poolesville helping with the mill. He married the next door neighbor Keziah Frances Oden in 1859. Thomas Henry died sometime after 1862 as well as wife because their two sons were living with maternal grandparents in Poolesville by 1870. I am trying to find out information about Thomas Henry Butcher's parents(John and Sophia M Butcher from Frederick, Md) and ancestors. I am sorry that is all I know about this Frederick County family. There are three seprate Butcher families in Frederick County and Montgomery Co all living close together but see no connection. There is the German Butchers and two English Bitcher families. I am thinking mine is English because of where the boy was christaiend in an Episcopal church and there is strong indication this family of mine is orginially from Anne Arundal and Eastern shore area of Maryland. But, unfortunely, not definitive proof at this time. In advance, thank you for any help you may be able to give me. 3. Hello, I have heard of the name Willcoxen, Willcoxin, Willcoxon. Sounds English to me.. Many people couldn't read or write and were the at the mercy of others. Then other's shortened it to Wilcox. In German female surnames the en or in at the end meant that they were unmarried. Nothing on the German Regiment book however, there are some in the DAR Patriot Index published by then in 1966. WILCOXSON, includes WILCOXEN: Daniel from NC, Elnathan from CT, Ephraim John from CT, Jesse from MD, John from MD, John from VA, John from MD. I n the book Pioneers of the Old Monocacy; The Early Settlers of Frederick County, Maryland 1721-1743 by Tracey and Dern. They have John Sr., John Jr., Thomas, and William. Do you want the information on any of these names? Please let me know. Helen > Hi Helen, > I'm not sure of the origin of the name Wilcoxon but I've looked everywhere > else for information on it. 1. Re: [MDFred] German Soldiers Fry(e)/Bohrer
    2. Deborah Jaquiss
    3. Dear Marilyn, Thanks for your prompt reply. Not what I wanted to hear but that's the way it is. Win some, lose some. But if one doesn't ask you'll never know. Please let me know if you ever run across a cousin to your Nicholas or another Nicholas Fry(e) who did marry Anna Maria Bohrer. I wonder if they could have been related? So many times first names were family names and a brother and/or uncle would name his children the same first names as his brother/cousin/uncle named his children. But I know Fry(e) is a fairly common name. Anna Maria Bohrer was probably in either Frederick Co, VA or MD both had a Frederick Co and Maria & Nicholas supposedly moved to the Carolinas after they married. Her brother John Peter Bohrer stayed in Frederick Co and Montgomery Co MD and fought in the Revolutionary War. She had at least two other brothers who survived to maturity: John Adam and John George both stayed in Frederick Co, VA where the present Berkley, Jefferson and Morgan Co in WV are. Sure would love to find them. The Bohrer family many times also had scads of children. Some had twenty or more by one wife - I'm glad I wasn't the wife. Thanks, again. 1. [MDFred] Hessian Soldiers in Rev. War resources
    2. Ruth L. Dunlap
    3. 5 volume set commonly referred to as HETRINA contains the Hessian units' records of enlistment/recruitment, rosters, and service - the units, names of soldiers , birth year, home village, date of desertion, and more. Very good source. SHEEISCHE TRUPPEN IM AMERIKANISCHEN UNABAHANGIGKETSKRIEG (HETRINA): INDEX NACH FAMILIENNAMEN, 5 vol., published by Arachivschule Marburg, Institut Fur Archivwissenschaft, Marburg, Germany It is in German, but it is easy to figure out the names and columns of information. The Geman postal code has been added to the villages. Village and/or postal code may be incorrect - I wrote to a village church pastor, and he replied that name did not appear in the church records. May have been a village of the same name in another state or the soldier was from "near" that village. This set of books can be found at major libraries (in genealogy collections of large city libraries, and probably in NEGHR library, NGS library, Allen Co. IN library, SLC library - and they may have it on film - etc.). and may be available on loan to members of some of these organizations. I have seen it at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Clifford Neal Smith has published in the 1970s at least 8 books or articles on the Hessians who served in British and American armies, deserters, prisoners of war, etc., plus ENCYLCOPEDIA OF GERMAN-AMERICAN GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH, with Anna Piszczan-Czaja Smith, 1976.
