    1. [MDFred] GARRARD DAVIS
    2. Hi: I just returned from a trip to Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia. I was in Frederick County, MD several times although I did not stop to do any research. Previously, I had been on this list looking for a Garrard Davis or Garad Davis who lived in Frederick County prior to 1796. I have now found more information on him: Inhabitants of Frederick County, MD, Volume 2, 1749-1800 by Stefanie R. Shaffer (975.287 N2SHA) shows a Grarad Davis, 1745, Whiskie, 282 ac., Pt#1 195, Now Frederick. What is meant by the word "Whiskie?" Is it a particular area of Frederick County? He was on a grand jury in Frederick Nov 1750. Also the following were grand jurors in March 1750: William Davis son of Garad and Benjamin Davis, whom I believe to be related. In Volume 1 of the above book, a Garrard Davis shows up twice: March 9, 1780 and 14 Oct 1767. In the following book: "This Was the Life excerpts from the Judgment Record of Frederick Co., MD 1748-1765" (975.287 P2, RIC by Millard Milhouse Rice there is a mention of my Garad Davis as follows: "Jury inquest on the body of a drownded Negro belonging to Garad Davis 28 Jan 1763." While at the State Library in Harrisburg, PA, I found the following: Maryland Early American Series by Ronald Vern Jackson: Garad Davis, Frederick Co., All Saints Parish 1756 and 1760. Where was All Saints Parish located? In the McLean (VA) FHC, I found a mention of a will of this Garad Davis dated 1764 in Frederick County. Apparently, his son, Garrard, came to Mason County, KY about 1796 and died there in either 1802 or 1804;. My 4th great-grandfather was Benjamin Davis born May 1776 who was the son of the Garrard who died in Kentucky. Garrard's will so mentions him along with his brothers and sisters. One of Benjamin's brothers was a Garrard Davis who married Elizabeth McDermott or McDermod probably dau of Francis McDermod in Frederick County, 1795. The McDermodds also moved to Mason County about the same time. Benjamin married Estella (Stella) Phillips dau of George and Mary (Bell) Phillips in Mason County, KY 1802/1804. They later came to Camden Township, Schuyler County, IL in 1832. I'm interested in any other records of this Garrard Davis in Frederick County or anyone doing research on this family. Thanks, Annie PS: Back in August, I mentioned that a Mathias Davis lived in the Monacacy Area of Frederick. His name was actually Meredith Davis and he was a Quaker. He shows up in the two volume series on the Monacacy area of Frederick.

    1. [MDFred] Haefner/Hefner etc. Lkg for mar. & fam. of Michael Haefner & Honor__, 1790s?
    2. I'm working on the family of Michael Heffner/Haefner/etc. and Honor __(unknown), believed to have been married in Frederick Co., and migrated to Bedford Co., PA, in the early 1800s. Both were born around 1775 or so. I'm especially interested in finding the birth/baptism of their daughter Lydia, ca. 1798. The family was either Lutheran or Reformed (Reformed after coming to Bedford Co.) Many of the family are buried at Bethel Reformed (Frame) church, Monroe Twp., Bedford Co., PA. Lydia married David Fletcher, also of Monroe Twp. It's possible that she may have married a Border prior to David Fletcher. News of any source material confirming the above would be welcome.

    3. not of my lines nut of interest to someone to investigate further I found in my searching Powered by PicoSearch http://www.picosearch.com/ http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Richland/RichlandJefferson.htm MEASEL, PETER, nurseryman; is located upon the declivity, a few steps north of Bellville, where he has resided since 1860, and given his attention to growing nursery stock; he makes no pretensions of excellency in his avocation, but it is a well-known truth that the trees he sells are most hardy, and always bear the fruit called for on the label. Nicholas Measel, the father of the subject of this sketch, was born to Frederick Co., Md., and was married to Mary Ann Hoover ; to them nine children were born, namely: Elizabeth, Jacob, Lyda, Margaret, Peter, Joshua, John, Mary and Susan. The second, fourth, seventh and ninth are dead. Peter Measel was born in Frederick Co., Md., May 27, 1820; at the age of 18 years, he moved with his parents to Wayne Co., Ohio, where he remained until 1833; in December of this year, he removed to Richland Co.; in 1846, he commenced coopering, at which he worked till 1857, living in Worthington Township ; in the spring of 1857, he turned his attention to the care of a nursery, and has continued at it since. He entered the connubial relation with Ann Long June 4, 1843; she was born in Wayne Co., Ohio, Jan. 18, 1825 or 1826, Mr. Measel and wife are members of the Disciple Church. Debbie

    1. [MDFred] 1880 Census Thomas H Butcher and Nathaniel Oden
    2. JACQUELINE KALINAUSKAS
    3. Catoctin, Frederick, Md. Looking for records that can be found for this community or any information of what churches are available or anything else about this area, especially in 1880. Found my g g grandfather Thomas Henry Butcher age 44 Blacksmith living there with wife Mary C age 30 and no children listed in the 1880 cnesus. Mary would be his second wife. His first wife would be Keziah Francis Oden married in 1859 in Poolesville, Montgomery County. She had died sometime before 1870. They had two sons William Thomas Butcher born abt 1860 in Poolesville and my great grandfather Marion Francis Butcher born about 1863 in Poolesville. The boys were raised by the maternal grandparents Alfred and Rachel Sedgwick Oden in Poolesville, Montgomery County, Md. In 1862 a Union doctor and officer declared that Thomas Henry Butcher age 26 of Poolesville post office,f arm labourer was not fit for military duty due to chronic dysentry. I was assuming he ahd died but could find no resting place in any local cemetery and thus continued to assume he was lost in the civil war somewhere. Every indication indicates that this is one and the same man and my g g grandfather with wife number 2. What also seals it for me is that 6 houses or farms up the road is Nathaniel Oden with wife and children and it is proven that he is the oldest son of Alfred and Rachel Oden of Poolesville, Maryland and the oldest brother of the deceased Keziah Francis Oden Butcher. So we have brother in laws living very close to each other in a neighboring county and community. That makes sense because Nathaniel was teh first born and Keziah Francis the second born so I would think they might have been close to not only in age but friendship as well and family ties. Question is anyone working on these lines and can anyone help me with research in this community of Catoctin, Frederick County, Md. Thank you. Jackie in Idho

Can anyone tell me more about this? Are there other types of >local records that I may have over looked. Cindy H. Cindy, I am not sure where in MD you are looking, I can only tell you my own experience in Frederick. The Frederick Equity Records are at Maryland State Archives (MSA). But at the Frederick Courthouse is a list of the equity cases of a certain person, or where his/her name appears, in my case Patrick O'Neill (1783-1855). I paid someone in Frederick to get them for me from the courthouse; she typed the list up. The principal players are named. There were about seven. They have a reference number to the number at MSA. The short form told me pretty much what was going on. I THINK they are usually legal battles about land, etc., mine were. I descend from Patrick's first wife, the parties in the equity cases involve his second wife, a wealthy widow who brought land to the marriage...and so children from her first marriage trying to get this land back. There was even one where the second wife was "vs" Patrick. The problem is cost. The man I dealt with at MSA told me he always warns people what they can be getting into. Look at their prices on Web site per page...an equity case can go on and on and on. He said when he found something that was very long, he would call people to let them know, but I don't know if all his colleagues do that. There was one I was interested in seeing, but it was about 150 pages long, I didn't get it because of cost. Now in my case, the cases involved people from whom I did not descend...the second wife. In yours it might be completely different. Patrick left no will, have you gotten a will? I got account books which is what you get when there is no will. Again, I paid someone in Frederick to get them for me at the Court House. Wills of a certain time frame are at LDS on microfilm, Patrick died after that date of course. Reference to the Will Index was just given on here recently. Other that I got was naturalization, again money, again at MSA. And the cemetery, the caretaker at St John's in Frederick took pictures for me...but basically he too admits their records are terrible. Other than that, there were many entries about Patrick in books...but I could not get them on interlibrary loan. There are volunteers who will do look-ups. I was lucky enough to have a friend in Salt Lake, where the books were, who was able to copy pages for me. Feel free to write me directly. I don't know how places other than Frederick work. Even the professionals were confused on what was where, as the process of transferring materials from Frederick to MSA was still ongoing. Barbara Ford Providence RI

Carla- If I remember correctly the earliest census you might find him on with his parents would be 1850 and that is the earliest that would list him by name anyway. If you think the family would still be in MD at that time -- try that first--MD (US) census. Check any families with this surname to find the one with the son of the right age in 1850. Joan
