Hello Thanks alot for your very informative reply. I had wondered about the birth/baptism record. Usually everything is very complete and I did not know if it was to be moved into 1806 for christening or back to 1804 for birth. I think your suggestion of 1804 is correct. I never had access to the book itself -- just a notation with no other dates to judge how it corresponded chronologically. The census information is perfect -- exactly what I needed. A 19 year old William in 1850 corresponds perfectly with William Joshua Kepler being born 2-22-1831. The Mary Magdalena Young is the mother of that head of household (John Kepler (1804-1879) you cited, not his wife. Elizabeth would be his only wife. John's father was named Johan/John and he was the husband of the Mary Magdalena Young you asked about.. The immediate neighbors -- Daniel and John are Conrad's grandchildren, not actualy his children, as is the cited head of household. Thanks again for all the help! I really do appreciate it. ----- Original Message ----- From: <DayvidA@aol.com> To: <MD-FRED-GEN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 11, 2002 1:11 PM Subject: Re: [MDFred] HELP! can anyone help me with a census link? To whom it may concern: Hello all! I am new to the list and was wondering if anyone could help my out with some family research. I am searching for any information on Solomon Longsworth, born in 1750. He died in 1820 in Frederick County, MD, along with his wife, Lucretia Nelson, who died on August 12, 1838. Together they had 7 children, all of which were born in Frederick County. In particular, I am looking for Solomon's parents because I have not been able to find any information on them, but any information would help. Thank you for your time and I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Best Regards, Brandi
The last meeting of the year of the Urbana Historical Society will be held on Tuesday November 26, 2002 at 7:00 p.m.. It will be held at the Hampton School, a restored one-room schoolhouse, located at the intersection of Route 80 (Fingerboard Road) and Park Mills Road. It is approximately two mile west of the Urbana interchange towards Buckeystown. The program will feature the research of the Saint Ignatius Catholic Church cemetery done by Mary Jane Dudderar and Eurath Ann Selkmann. The speakers have prepared a booklet which documents the burial sites, photographs of the tombstones and a short family history of some of the persons buried there. Their booklet is for sale and all proceeds go to the St. Ignatius Country Church restoration and upkeep. For additional information please contact Gil House (301) 831-8215 or 663-6244
Go to Cyndi's List, then to MD, then to Frederick County, and look for "Lookup Volunteers" or "Books We Own." You might want to stop at just MD first...I think the Myers book is all MD. I had some lookups that way. There are also probably others on Frederick MD GenWeb. Also just look at the list of books, Barnes? has a lot. My marriage is NOT in Myers...or anywhere. (not my own, but my ancestor's!) I can't remember how late the Jacob Engelbrech Marriage Ledger goes, I only have pages copied for O'Neill, people will also do lookups in that. Well now that I think of it, one of the marriages is 1849. PS. There is a lot of movement from Frederick to OH, I have it in my ancestors, some of them going back and forth, but not to that county. Barbara Ford PS. I tried, you can't get any of these books on interlibrary loan.
I believe Margaret Myers also wrote a boo on the Zimmerman family. Can anyone do a lookup in that book for me? Cindy Hoffman
Tina, Margaret E. MYERS (if this is the lady I believe it might be) can be reached thru the Frederick County Historical Society in downtown "Frederick-City". She's authored a number of historical writings and FCHS does know how to reach her. I have her card but I'm packed to the ceiling and ready to move to my new home this weekend, or I'd try to find it for you. Try emailing the FCHS. Goto http://www.google.com and run a search for "Frederick County Historical Society" less someone out here knows their email address off hand. I have recently found a marriage record for a John Beck who married Mary A. Snurr on the 9th of Aug 1851. Online it says that the book, Marriage Licenses of Frederick County, 1841-1865 by Margaret E. Myers may contain more information. Does anyone on the list have this book that wouldn't mind looking it up for me? Also any suggestions, I am kinda stuck on this family!? This is what I have and have done: I have searched the 1850 Census and have not been able to locate John Beck and family or Mary Snurr and family. I have not yet searched the 1860/1870 Census yet since I will need to do these by hand since I have not yet found an online index nor is there one at our library. The 1880 Census does list John Beck's Household in Champaign County, OH. This is what it says John Beck, self, Married, male, White, 33, OH, Farming, parents born in Prussia. Mary Beck, wife, married, female, White, 61, Keeping House, parents born in MD. Barbry A. Beck, daughter, single, female, white, 24, MD, parents born in Pruss and MD. John Gorman, son in law, married, male, white, 27, OH, works on farm, parents born in Ireland. Anna M. Gorman, daughter, married, female, white, 26, M, parents born in Prussia and Maryland. Charles C. Gorman, grandson, single, male, white, 4, OH, parents born OH and MD. Mary N. Gorman, granddaughter, single, female, white, 1, OH, parents born OH and MD. First some things stick out immediately. There is a 28 year difference in age and the children's father is not this John Beck if he was born in OH. Questions and more Questions!!! Now I look at the 1900 Census for Champaign County, MD and find that Mary is no longer with us but I do find John. Here is the short version of what I find. John was born Apr 1828 and is 73 years old and was born in Prussia and is living with his daugher Barbara who matches all that I have. Did they just make a huge mistake on the 1880 Census? I also know that John Gorman immigrated to the US in 1840 from the 1900 Census and that he did not become a naturalized citizen. Now I also have a letter from John and Anna Gorman's granddaughter, written about 20 years ago and has since passed on so I can talk to her myself. In this letter she states that Anna M. Gorman is her grandmother and that John Beck and Mary Snurr are her great grandparents. Due to an estranged relationship with her father, she lived most of her life with Anna and John Gorman, her grandparents. They also have a picture of Mary Snurr and the family gossip is that her mother was white and her father was Indian and never married. Several people had made a comment to Anna about this and she would get mad and never talk about it. I also have the obit for Anna Mary Gorman. It tells me that they moved from MD to OH about 1855. I have not located John and Mary Beck's obits yet but I am looking for them. They had three children, Anna who was born in Maryland, Barbara and Joseph. Any help or suggestions on this family would be greatly appreciated!!! Tina Stedman Albuquerque, NM
I need to find more information on the following family: Lewis Smith abt. 1844, death unknown, burial unknown married 1/2/1867 at her parents home in Wolfsville (her father is John Baker,Blacksmith) Rose Ann Baker b. 4/2/1849, died 8-6-1929 buried Mt. Bethel, Garfield, Fred.Co., MD Lewis and "Roseann) are found in the 1870 census in the Hauver District of Frederick Co., MD with their first child, William D. Smith b. 1869 Their second child, John Henry Clayton Smith was born10/15/1863, died 12/19/1915 Their third child, Harry Edward Smith was born June 1874, died 5/26/1910 in Smoketown, Washington Co,MD. The Middletown Valley Register reported on 2/27/1874: .....in Catoctin District ..where all parties resided....Thomas Shelton eloped with the wife and two children of Lewis Smith, taking with them all the bed clothing belonging to Mr. Smith, who at the time was in Washington County at work. Shelton was also a married man, and left behind him a wife and one child....Mr. Smith was greatly astonished when he returned home on Saturday night last, to find his wife and children gone, and his house emptied of much of its most valuable contents......... I have checked the 1880 census for any of these people, and only found one of the children, William staying with his grandfather, John Baker in Wolfsville, MD. I cannot find Thomas Shelton, his wife Mary, son James OR more importantly Rose Ann Smith, Lewis Smith or their second and third child. Rose Ann would have been pregnant with Harry Edward at the time of this article. In 1895, Harry Edward Smith stated on his marriage license he was living at Crystal Falls which I assume to be Pondsville in Washington CO, MD. I have his complete family line down to me. In 1899 Rose Ann Baker Smith married guess who? Thomas Shelton. Both said they were widowed and lived near Pondsville. So did Rose Ann go back to Lewis or live with Tom Shelton? Where was she for 25 years?Rose Ann and Thomas Shelton are buried together at Mt. Bethel U.M. Cemetery near Garfield in Frederick County, MD. I have not been able to locate an obituary for Lewis Smith nor a grave in either Washington or Frederick County. Any help with this mystery is much appreciated!! CIndy Hoffman

Re German names, I've been searching for several years without success for a clue to the origin and family of Eleanor Felker. She was the second (or possibly third) wife of my gr gr gr grandfather John Bartlett. They married in St. John's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown in 1812. John was Church of England, so I'm guessing Eleanor probably was German Lutheran. Anyone know of Felkers (Voelker, Vogler, etc.) in Maryland or southeastern PA? There was a rumor that Eleanor was PA Dutch. John and Eleanor moved to Washington County, Ohio, around 1820. Thanks! Another thing to keep in mind when researching German American ancestors: By tradition, German Americans baptized the children with two given names. The first given name was a spiritual saint's name; the second was a secular name, which is the name the person would be known by - for example: Johan Adam Muller or Anna Maria Kuch in church records could become Adam Miller and Mary Cook in secular records. It looks like Francis Hagan and wife Margaret baptized a son, Benjamin, at the Lutheran congregation in Frederick on October 29, 1789 (Benjamin was born on July 27, 1788, according to the same record). People came into Frederick usually from either the north (York and Lancaster Counties, PA) or the east (Baltimore Co.). If they were Irish Catholic, my bet would be Baltimore. There was a large Hagan/Hagen family present in Revolutionary period Frederick, but I don't see any mention of Francis. My bet would be Baltimore Co. David
Fred, some German names in Frederick Co., MD in 1790 beginning with Francis are: Hoffman, Kisinger, Winbegler (was Windbugler) Klienhart, Mantz, Mett, Michaelhein and Sanbach. There were many more in different counties of MD. Joanne
Fred, I tried putting the first name Francis in PA census rcds. for 1790 just to see what I could get. 283 names came up. Some of the obvious German names were Umbehacker, Dieter, Moser, Mosser, Huber, Hubler, Akles, Croninger, Geisse, Grice, Kremer, Bockius, Bibble and Yountz. There were too many to go thru, but this gives you a sample. Joanne

I have been searching for the birth place of Francis HAGAN for 25 years and cannot find it. Francis first appears in Frederick County records in 1787 when he witnessed a marriage in the Reformed Church. He married in that church the next year and is buried in the St. Johns the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church cemetery. My research shows he did not come from Charles County, MD or St. Mary's County, MD. If not there, then where? Tks, Fred Hagan Fred, How have you eliminated "over there" as a place of birth????? Or why have you? My Patrick O'Neill was born in Ballinascreen Co Derry Ireland in 1783 and died in Frederick in 1855 and is buried in the same cemetery. How do you know he was not Irish? My Patrick belonged to a gang of fairly wealthy Irish, bought and sold land, held offices...you see their names together a lot. Do you have the tombstone info? Patrick's says where and when he was born. One of his pals, Michael Byrne, does not have place of birth but his mother's does. They are buried all right next to each other. What year did he die? He seems to have converted? 25 years is a long time....... A lot of Irish came in late 1700's, after uprising. All I know about Patrick early is that he came "sometime before the War of 1812." Hello, Mary Ann, I found no Mahoneys in any of the three books mentioned. I also checked some cemetery listings I have for Washington County and found nothing there except this listing: MANONEY, Joseph Elbert s/o J. M. & M. E. MALONEY b. 8 Nov. 1921 d. 11 Feb 1922. The two spellings of the name in this listing is how it appears in the book. It is not a typo on my part. The book is Vol. VI of Washington County Cemetery Records, page 53. The burial site is Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown. I have only volumes I, VI, and VII, so someone else would have to check the others for you. Hello Dory.. could I ask you a favor to look up the surname of Mahoney in this book. If such is found then I will just buy the book. It may answer more of my questions.. Fred: Frederick County was formed from Prince George's County in 1748. In many cases, our ancestors lived in the same place, but the county lines, etc. changed. Artis Ancestors: HEAD, KENDALL, BIGGER
Sylvia, I have some information for you. This is from the book, "Washington County Church Records of the 18th Century 1768-1800," Wright, Willow Bend Books, 1988. At Salem Reformed Church are these two baptisms: Page 32: Jacob of Conrath Bueckle and Margretha, married; b. 10 Aug 1770; bapt. 19 May 1771; wit: Jacob Zoeller. Page 33: Elisabeth of Conrath Buechli and Margretha, married; b. 28 March 1772; bapt. 30 Aug [1772, I would assume by its placement in the records], witness Catharina Eschi. In the introduction of the book it says this about Salem Reformed Church, which is listed in the Table of Contents as being "at Cearfoss": "Records of the Salem Reformed Church begin with baptisms performed in 1771. Two transcripts are held by the Maryland Historical Society: one covering the period 1771-1783; and a second portion of the records, beginning with 1787, which was copied by Miss Electa Ziegler. The Pennsylvania German Society Quarterly indicates that the originals are held by the church. In addition, copies are held by the Western Maryland Room, Washington County and the D.A.R. Library, Washington, D.C." Another tidbit: In the same book, page 12 is a baptism at the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Elizabethtown (Hagerstown), which is now known as St. John's Lutheran Church, of a Cath. daughter of Andreas Luz and his wife Julianna, born 31 Mar 1794 and baptised 7 Dec., sponsors were Jacob Bunckele and his wife Cath. I then looked for this same baptism in the records of St. John's Lutheran (Maryland German Church Records, Vol. 13, St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland 1770-1819, Frederick Weiser, 1999.) There I find all the same information (page 25), except Jacob's name is spelled Binckele. The original must have been difficult to decipher. In the index of this book are 24 listings under the name spelled variously as Binkley, Binckele, Binckle, Bincklee, Binckly, Binglee, or Binkly! You may find it worth the expense to purchase this book. You can get it at www.WillowBendBooks.com . I then wondered why they would be at the Lutheran Church rather than the Reformed (although lots of people switched from one to the other), so I looked at the records of Zion Reformed in Hagerstown. (Volume 12 of the same series.) There I found many references to the same surname (with spelling variations), including Jacob and Catherine and also others. This is another book that would be worth purchasing. According to the first book I mentioned, copies of these original records are also kept at the Western Maryland Room of the Washington County Free Library, and at the DAR library. The Maryland State Archives holds the originals and has some of the records on microfilm. If you choose to visit the Western Maryland Room of the Washington County Library, call ahead, because it is staffed by volunteers and has limited hours. The library is at 100 S. Potomac Street, Hagerstown, and the phone number is: (301) 739-3250. There is a Salem Reformed Church (now United Church of Christ, as most of the old German Reformed Churches are) listed in the Washington County telephone book at 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown, (301) 739-9212. That address is out toward Cearfoss (northwest of Hagerstown off Rte. 58, the Cearfoss Pike), so it is probably the church in which you are interested, though I can't say for sure. If you are not able to get to these books or purchase them, I will transcribe records for you via email. I may fail to make connections you would if you looked at these yourself, though. If you want me to do that, email me off list at Dory@dol.net . Happy hunting!
