This really isn't a surprise. Ellicott City was known as the "Marriage Mill." You didn't have to wait the customary 3 days after getting a marriage license if you married there. My grandparents, Ruby (nee Reinhold) and Jacob Parker Eberwein, Sr., went there to get married, did so and then returned to their own homes. It was a "secret" wedding. When the marriage licenses were published in the Baltimore paper, a neighbor told Ruby's father who told her to tell my grandfather to come live with them and work in his bakery. I believe the main reason for the 3 day wait was that you needed a blood test to get married. They were looking for communicable diseases from typhoid to syphilis, and non-communicable things like mental defects. Frankly, the only explanation for many of my family branches is that, in Maryland, the blood test and 3 day waiting period was not required and therefore mental challenges were disregarded. It would at least explain how I think on a regular basis. <grin> Bonnie -------------- Original message -------------- From: Margaret I Obert <board-obert@verizon.net> > This may come as a surprise, but they were married in Howard County, > MD, on 24 June 1908.
