Grove with whom he had 4 children - John Calvin Perago, Sarah Rebecca Perago, William Harvey Perago, and Caroline Perago. All 4 children are listed in the 1850 census. Mary C. Grove died in Sep 1854. James married Mary M. Miller on 17 Aug 1858 with whom he had 6 children - Charles L. Perago, Ida Elizabeth Perago, Jacob Miller Perago, Fannie Jane Perago, Harry F. Perago, and J. Kerwin Perago. The 4 children from the previous marriage can be found living with other relatives in 1860. John Calvin and Caroline are living with John Grove Jr. believed to be the father of James' first wife Mary C. Grove. Sarah Rebecca is probably the Mary Perego living with John and Lydia Ewing. The age matches and Lydia Ewing was born Lydia Godrey, a sister of John Grove Jr.'s first wife Sarah Godrey. William Harvey is probably the Henry Perego with Thomas and Harriet Ann Gist in York. The age matches and he was listed Henry F. in the obituary for John Calvin. The Gist connection is interesting because in 1880, James and his daugher were living with Harriet Anne Gist . Later, Thomas and Harriet Ann Gist's son John T. Gist testified that he was nephew of James. This would make Harriet Anne a sister to James. However, the record of her marriage shows her as Harriet Smith. Perhaps she was a half-sister to James with separate fathers. I would be greatful if you had any further information on the Gist family or other information that might be helpful in finding James' parents. James' son John Calvin is my g-g-grandfather.
