    3. Hi, Instead of sending for a social security number, go to your local Social Security office and ask if she had a number. Won't cost you anything, and you will get your answer much faster. My father had a social security number, but worked for himself and did not pay in to social security. Therefore, he did not collect anything. When he died social security was not notified, and they did not know he had died. Because of that, I could not get a copy of his application. But I did have his card and number when I was told by one clerk that he did not have a card. I went to our local SS office and got my information within 10 minutes.
