    3. Again I am grateful for the wealth of valuable information kind listers have provided for me on the above subject. I can see I am going to have to go down the death notice route in the case of the two more recent deaths I am interested in. Regards to all Jane CWR4586@aol.com wrote: Each state has differing laws with regards to privacy. Maryland death certificates are private for 20 years. 1986 death certificates should be available to the public on microfilm at the archives in Annapolis at the beginning of 2007. You would need to know the month of death and county or Baltimore City to isolate it. They are listed by month, subdivided by county, then alphabetical. Cost of printing from microfilm at the archives is 50 cents a page. Earlier years have been indexed and can be ordered through the following site. Cost is $12 per certificate. _http://mdvitalrec.net/cfm/index.cfm_ (http://mdvitalrec.net/cfm/index.cfm) Florida, for which I have received several death certificates, has no time limit with regard to death certificates (unless recently enacted). However, the cause of death is private.for 50 years and will not be on the copy you receive. They have a PDF request to fill out and mail in. Cost is $5 per certificate requested. _http://www.doh.state.fl.us/planning_eval/vital_statistics/deaths.htm_ (http://www.doh.state.fl.us/planning_eval/vital_statistics/deaths.htm) In a message dated 11/25/2006 2:55:49 P.M. Each state will have a Vital Records website that will tell you what info you need to send them and what their requirements are. Privacy issues are getting more emphasis now, so it is sometimes harder to get this info. Do you already have the obituaries? You might try asking for the death certificates for family medical history reasons, rather than genealogy. Not a lie--you surely would want to know of inherited diseases, right? Also, sometimes local people can go into a Vital Records office and copy down the info by hand for free. Good luck! As this is my first brush with the American system, I am wondering how likely it would be for me to be successful in applying for death certificates dated between 1985 and 2000 when my relationshop is rather distant -- first cousin once removed, etc. Just so that I won't be spending money in vain!
