One other thing. A lot of the SSDI lists don't start til about 1960 and if you know the person's name and birthday , put it in the search engine it comes up.
Forgive my hijacking this topic to ask a related question of my own. As this is my first brush with the American system, I am wondering how likely it would be for me to be successful in applying for death certificates dated between 1985 and 2000 when my relationshop is rather distant -- first cousin once removed, etc. Just so that I won't be spending money in vain!
