    2. That was the way it was before everyone had telephones. You could get word that someone left a message, someone was going to call at a certain time, or someone was actually on the phone and so you ran as fast as you could to the corner store. Later, when phone booths were in stores, you could have some privacy when someone called that number by closing the door which was very hot during this time of the year.
